001Ricky Jay Hamm was born September 13, 1949 at the Hand Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa. His deceased parents, Clifford R. and Freda Blakesley Hamm, owned and operated Hamm's Appliance for many years. Rick's stepmother Dorothy Olmsted also preceded Rick in passing. Rick attended Shenandoah schools and then college at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, where he majored in psychology.

Rick was by all accounts a talented drummer and this was his passion from an early age. He played for the high school concert and marching bands as well as with several local bands, once appearing on television in Omaha, Nebraska. At age 15 in 1965, he joined The Green Giants and traveled extensively throughout the Midwest. Their single release "Pity Me" and "You're Going to Lose That Girl" went to Number 3 in the St. Joseph, Missouri area. The Green Giants were inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in August of 2003.

After college, Rick moved to Nashville to pursue his music career. He played for a number of country stars including Waylon Jennings and Barry Sadler. About two years ago, and after the death of his father in Shenandoah, Rick and his old cat Buddy moved to his brothers' ranch near Collbran, Colorado. While there he drummed for the Al Reid (country) Band, which included his brother Jerry, and he really enjoyed that until health problems prevented him from continuing.

Rick's unexpectedly passed away at the ranch on April 21, 2012 at the age of 62. Due to various circumstances, his return to Shenandoah was delayed until August 15, at which time he will be laid to rest with his parents. He is survived by his half-brothers Jack and Jerry in Colorado, by three stepsisters, Kathy Olmsted Backus in Omaha, Nebraska, Judy Olmsted Byers in Des Moines, Iowa, and Darlene Olmsted Adams in Severville, Tennessee, and by other relatives and many friends. Everyone who knew Rick liked him; he was always described as "a really nice guy". He will be missed by all.
002Robert Gene Ryan was born December 26, 1965 in Clarinda, Iowa the son of Donald James, II and Beverly Verlee (Keith) Ryan. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon, August 28, 2012 from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident at the age of 46 years, 8 months and 2 days.
Gene grew up in Page County and graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1986. He was married three times and blessed with 5 children, Courtney, Kent, Brandon, Robert and Colton. Gene loved being outside fishing, camping and working on cars. His true love was his family.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his father, Donald Ryan, Jr; and his sister, Terri Lockerby.
Survivors include his children, Courtney Ryan of Shenandoah, Iowa, Kent Ryan of Marysville, Kansas, Brandon Ryan of Nashville, Tennessee, Robert Ryan of Nebraska City, Nebraska, Colton Stout of Ft. 003Joseph Ronald Beran was born April 26, 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Joseph Francis and Lucille Marion (Fortin) Beran. He passed away on Tuesday afternoon, September 4, 2012 at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa at the age of 62 years, 4 months and 9 days.
Joe grew in Grand Island, Nebraska and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1968. On January 9, 1971, he was united in marriage to Barbara LoAnn Bredensteiner in Lincoln, Nebraska. This union was blessed with four children, Joe, Jeff, Danny and Kerri.
He worked for Union Pacific Railroad before going to work at Sperry’s New Holland for 25+ years. He lived his entire life in Grand Island until he moved to Northboro, Iowa to care for his mother-in-law in 2008. Joe enjoyed sports, especially playing baseball and fast pitch softball. He also liked umpiring American Legion Baseball. Joe also served as an Assistant Scout Leader for Troop 120 in Grand Island and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Joe loved the outdoors, fishing and finding the big buck while deer hunting. Joe also attended the Locust Grove Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws; a son, Timothy; and two sisters, Marge and Karla.
Survivors include his wife, LoAnn Beran of Northboro, Iowa; his children, Joe Beran and his wife Kim of Grand Island, Nebraska, Jeff Beran and Danielle Garcia of Omaha, Nebraska, Danny Beran and his wife Karla of Grand Island, Nebraska, Kerri Beran of Shenandoah, Iowa; five grandchildren, Blake Beran, Alexis Zito, Kinsley Beran, Ryan Gill and Justin Gill; a brother, Doug Beran and his wife Cindy of Grand Island, Nebraska; a sister, Pam Kendall and her husband Randy of Grand Island, Nebraska; brothers-in-law, David Bredensteiner of Bedford, Iowa, Scott Bredensteiner and his wife Sandy of Pflugerville, Texas; along with many other relatives and friends. Lloyd L. Binns, age 81 of Clarinda, IA passed away on Saturday; September 29, 2012 at the Clarinda Regional Health Center in Clarinda, IA.

Lloyd was born on October 8, 1930 at Hamburg, IA; the son of Clifford L. and Ada (Garrett) Binns.  He attended school in Fremont County, IA and graduated from high school.

He was united in marriage to Marjorie Marie Cavner on February 9, 1951 in Hamburg, IA.  She preceded him in death on October 29, 2003.

Lloyd owned and operated his own Tree Trimming Business in Clarinda.  He also owned and took care of several rental properties in the Clarinda area.  Lloyd built numerous terraces and moved many yards of dirt with his bulldozer in southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri.

He is survived by his son Eddie Binns and wife Anne of Clarinda, IA; three grandchildren:  Wendy, Dustin and Austin; one great-grandchild; siblings:  Betty Wolford of Red Oak, IA, Joyce Albricht of Hamburg, IA and William Binns of Manteca, CA; other family and friends.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by three sons:  Wesley, Leslie and David and a brother Carl.

Graveside Funeral Services will be held Thursday (Oct. 4) at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion  (Utterback) Cemetery northeast of Hamburg, IA with Dale Owen officiating.  Burial will follow the services. Rash-Gude Funeral Home.

005Edward Joseph “Joe” Docker, age 84, of Essex, Iowa passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Edward Joseph “Joe” Docker was born June 26, 1928 Northeast of Red Oak, Iowa the son of John Bernard and Mabel (Olson) Docker. He grew up in Montgomery County and graduated from Red Oak High School. He was united in marriage to Jeanette Runyan on May 17, 1953 and two children were born to this union: David and James. Joe farmed and held various other jobs before starting to work for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired after many years as a driver‘s license examiner. Joe was united in marriage to Muriel Morris on February 14, 2002 and they made their home in Essex, Iowa. He was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak, Iowa. Joe enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and working with his Farmall Tractor. He spent many vacations at antique tractor shows.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his son, James Docker. Survivors include his wife: Muriel Docker of Essex, Iowa; son: David Docker and wife Kim of Red Oak, Iowa; daughter-in-law: Kelly Docker of Red Oak, Iowa; grandchildren: Ben Docker and wife Kellijo of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Matthew Docker and wife Kassie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Andrew Docker of Red Oak, Iowa; Mindy Docker of Red Oak, Iowa; Chris Docker of Omaha, Nebraska; and Dan Docker and wife Kilee of Emerson, Iowa; great grandchildren: Ellie and Brody Docker of Rock Rapids, Iowa and Colin Docker of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brothers: Robert Docker and wife Ruth of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Bernard Docker and wife Delores of Red Oak, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, October 15, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Red Oak with Pastor Fred Pilecki and Pastor Jim Ressegieu officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 2-4 PM Sunday, October 14, 2012 at the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. 006Randall Lane Fundermann, the son of Frank J. and Carol (Eyer) Fundermann Sr. was born November 1, 1961 in Sioux City, Iowa. He passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2012, following a courageous seven year battle with cancer at the Immanuel Medical Center, Omaha, NE. Randall lived 50 years, 11 months and 17 days.

Randy's earliest childhood was lived in the Anthon, Iowa area. When Randy was in 2nd grade the family moved to Tabor, Iowa. In 1980, Randy graduated from Fremont Mills High School. Following graduation, he began his farming career in the Tabor area. Randy was united in marriage to Phyllis M. Sell on September 14, 1985 in Glenwood, Iowa. In 1990, they purchased and moved to their farm south of Red Oak. Along with crops, Randy also raised hogs. He had a knack for repairing equipment, along with 'fixing' anything else that broke. Randy especially enjoyed when his family gathered for the harvesting and canning of fruit from their orchard's 30 fruit trees. Randy loved to hunt, fish and to ride his motorcycle. Along with farming and for the past 15 years, Randy had worked for UPS as a pre-loader. He attended the Fremont Lutheran Church at Nyman.

Randy is survived by his wife, Phyllis Fundermann of rural Red Oak, IA; three children: Ethan Fundermann of Red Oak, IA; Ciera Soukup and husband Levi of Ankeny, IA; and Haley Fundermann of the home; parents, Frank and Carol Fundermann Sr. of rural Red Oak, IA; brother, Frank Fundermann Jr. of Red Oak, IA; sister, Carrie Ramnes and husband Jeff of Omaha, NE; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

007Fern Margaret was born September 26, 1917 near Latimer IA, to John and Emma (Ahrens) Vogel- the 8th of 9 children. She moved with her family to Blanchard, IA in the 1930’s.Early in her life Fern worked for families in the area helping with cooking, cleaning and care giving. These were skills well taught by her mother and ones she used throughout her life.
She married Ted Edwards in 1938 in Council Bluffs, IA. They first lived and farmed near Westboro, MO, before moving to their home of 65 years east of Blanchard, IA, where they raised 4 daughters, all of whom were born at home.
Fern was a member of the Eastern Star and a founding member of the neighborhood Kil Kare Klub. She was active in the Blanchard Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and served church functions. Fern was always available and capable of doing many things to support the community.
As a farm wife she spent many happy hours tending and sharing her vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed sewing for herself and her daughters. Fern was an expert quilter and many of her infant quilts wrapped community babies. To some, she was known as “Fern Heloise” with many helpful hints.
Fern passed away October 16, 2012 at Smithville, Missouri. Fern was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her parents, sisters Lena Rathman, Flora (Dolly) Dorhman, Alma Winger, and brothers Walter and Lewis Vogel.
Surviving are one brother Leonard Vogel, sisters Vera Wiley-Dunn of Colby, KS and Helen Cato of Pueblo, CO. Also surviving are daughters Dorothy (Kelley) Snipes of Kirksville, MO, Norma (Glenn) Mackey of Braddyville, IA, Mary (John) Richmond of So Sioux City, NE, Lois (Terry) King of Smithville, MO, 11 grandchildren 3 step grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funreal services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Blanchard United Methodist Church with interment at Blanchard Cemetery. 008Patricia L. Herzberg, 71, of Shenandoah, Iowa formerly of Clarinda, Iowa, died Sunday October 14, 2012 at The Ambassador in Sidney, Iowa following a hard fought battle with cancer. She was born on November 29, 1940 to Carl and Vera (Davis) Henry. On November 22, 1967 she was married to Lyle Herzberg in Essex at the home of Lester and Mabel Herzberg (Lyle’s parents).
Patricia was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was treasurer of Porter’s Lake Lutheran Center and ran many of the skating parties. Her family and Porter’s Lake activities were an immense source of enjoyment.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Lyle, parents Carl and Vera Henry, son Randall Clark, parents in law Lester and Mabel Herzberg, brothers Vincent Henry and Volley Henry and sisters Imojean King and Jewell Gray.
Patricia is survived by her sons Michael Clark of Council Bluffs, Timothy Herzberg of Harlan and Joseph Herzberg and wife Shiela of Harlan, daughters Lesli and husband Thomas Nordhues of Clarinda and Rebecca and husband Eric Dunkle of Farragut, 14 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, sister Mary and husband Ralph Pinkerton of Salem Oregon, Brothers Vernon and wife Prue Henry of Central Point, Oregon and Carl and wife Martha Henry of Shenandoah, sister-in-law Ruth (Mrs. Volley) Henry of Clearfield, many nieces nephews and friends.

009Leonard Leo Schafer was born on July 23, 1950 to Margaret and Henry Schafer at St. Francis Hospital in Maryville, Missouri. He was the youngest of eleven children. Leonard had three sisters, Clara Ann, Dorothy Rose and Mary Margaret. He had seven brothers, Herman, Bob, Martin, Ernest, Jim, Bill and John.
He went to school at Saint Pat, also known as Saint Gregory’s and graduated from Maryville High School in 1968. The neighbors sent a letter and Leonard received a draft notice. He enlisted March 27, 1969. He served as a mechanist while in the Navy. Leonard was discharged from active duty and went into the Reserves on January 2, 1973. He was released from total military service March 26, 1975.
In January 1973, after he left the Navy, he took a few courses at a vocational school. Leonard worked at several professions in Kentucky. He came home in 1974 and worked as a truck driver.
Leonard met Carole Lynn Zapf in December 1974. They were married on August 22, 1975 in Graham, Missouri. After their honeymoon they settled down in Tarkio, Missouri. While living in Tarkio, his son Derrick Adam was born on December 12, 1978. Leonard worked for the Heinold Hog Market.
After five years, Leonard and Carole bought their first home in Delta, Iowa. A year later he became the Manager of Heinold Hog Markets in Maryville, Missouri. He moved his family there in February 1981. While living in Maryville, on September 10, 1981, his daughter Angela Rose was born.
In 1982 Leonard moved his family to a farm outside of Maitland, Missouri. He became a correctional officer at the Clarinda Correctional Facility in Clarinda, Iowa on November 18, 1983. A year later Leonard and Carole bought a farm near New Market, Iowa where they currently reside.
Leonard and Carole lost their beloved son, Derrick Adam, in a tragic fire on January 27, 2007. His first grandchild, Colten Adam, was born on July 11, 2007 and his granddaughter, Cheyenne Lynn, was born on January 10, 2011.
Leonard retired from the Clarinda Correctional Facility March 23, 2007.
Leonard loved his family, many friends, enjoyed many activities and belonged to numerous organizations.
Leonard passed away unexpectedly October 13, 2012 at Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Derrick in 2007; brothers Herman, Bob, Earn, Jim and John Schafer; and brother-in-law John Mullinax.
Surviving Leonard is his wife Carole of New Market, IA; daughter Angela Schafer-Rauch and husband Conway Rauch and their children Colten Adam Schafer and Cheyenne Lynn Rauch, all of Burlington Junction, Missouri; siblings, Martin Schafer and wife Marilyn of Barnard, MO, Bill Schafer and wife Dorothy of Maryville, MO, Annie Johnson and husband Duane of Omaha, NE, Dorothy Mullinax of Grapevine, TX, Mary Margaret Hernandez and husband Don of St. Joseph, MO, sisters-in-law Kathleen Schafer, Skidmore, MO, Edna Schafer, Maryville, MO, and Karen Schafer, Holt, MO; nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel, Clarinda, with Rev. Russ Clark officiating. 010Robert Howard was born on June 30, 1925 to John and Nellie Danielson Howard in Clyde, KS. He grew up on the farm and went to a country school and then to Clyde town high school.
He attended Kansas University. He was drafted into the Army, returning after a stint in Europe to go to KU. He was recalled into the Army and returned to Europe once again finally coming back to KU and graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Business in 1955.
He became a buyer for Sear Roebuck Catalog in Kansas City. He was there until 1978 when he was transferred to Dallas until 1987. He then went on to Sears’ headquarters in Chicago finally retiring in 1990 after 35 years of service.
He married Gwen Grove in Clarinda, IA on Nov.24, 1957 (almost 55years) who survives him along with son, Scott (Nikki and grandsons, Cy and Calvin); son Philip (Karen); son, Clark (Ginger and grandchildren, AJ and Ava).
He retired from the Army and Army Reserves after serving 35 years and earning the rank of Colonel.
The Army was one of his hobbies. He was an avid gardener, a great reader of books, enjoyed bowling on leagues in Texas and Illinois. He dabbled in refinishing furniture and upholstery.
He served on many committees as a member of the Methodist church in the town in which he lived, most recently serving at St. Mark’s in Overland Park, KS.
Through his generosity and desire to help medial education he donated himself to the Willed Body Program at KU Med Center in Kansas City , KS.
Memorial services will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 15, 2012 at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Overland Park, KS. Memorials are suggested to the church. Interment will be at the National Cemetery, Lansing, KS.

011A. Robert Auffert was born May 26, 1930 at Parnell, MO. He graduated Parnell High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Peru Teachers College, Peru, NE. He taught at Clarinda High School being the instructor in Industrial Arts and Driver’s Education. Many years he filled his spare time helping local farmers and driving cars for Shore Motor Company. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korea War.
He was married July 10, 1954 at Parnell to Patty Chapman. She preceded him in death. Robert passed away Thursday, October 4, 2012 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He is survived by his children: Michele Peterson (Jim), Lake Zurich, IL, Luke Auffert (Linda) Clarinda, IA, Jay Auffert (Abby) Griswold, IA, Susan Thummel (Keane) Clarinda, IA, John Auffert (Sarah) Texas, and George Auffert (Mary) St. Paul, MN; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Robert Auffert will be held 11 a.m. Monday, October 8, 2012 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel in Clarinda. Interment will be at Clarinda Cemetery.

012Lula Ann Harms was born September 29, 1943 at Maryville, Missouri to Clayton and Lela (Davis) Peters. She graduated West Nodaway High School. Lula worked at Ever Ready Battery in Maryville, retiring in 2004 after 26 years 3 months of service. Her favorite things were family activities, bird watching, giving out lots of Honey-Do’s, and quilting with the Sewing Club at the Police Station on Wednesdays. Among all these activities she was also a farm wife.
Lula passed away unexpectedly October 3, 2012 at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Frank Peters.
She is survived by her husband, LaVern, of Clarinda; children Tony Dulin of Pickering, MO, Todd Dulin and wife Cindy of Bedford, IA, Tracy Dulin and fiancé Shelly Owens of Maryville, MO; step children Tina Hartman and husband Rick of College Springs, IA, Tammy Harms, College Springs, IA; grandchildren Jeston Dulin, Gage Dulin, Kanyon Dulin, Patrick Dulin and fiancé Andrea Hamilton, Kailer Barnthson, Emily Murphy and husband Jack, Rickie Hartman, Ryan Booher and fiancé Lindsey; and great granddaughter Brylee Jo Booher; brother Fred Peters and wife Carol of Maryville, MO; sister Alice “Peg” Campbell and husband Ray of Garden City, MO; sister-in-law Betty Kemp and husband John of Maryville, MO; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family were held 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at the Ritchie Funeral Home. Burial with military rites by the American Legion Sergy Post 98 were in the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Paul LeRoy "Pete" Hookham was born September 23, 1922 on a farm near Clarinda, Iowa. He was raised by Albert Hookham and Lula (Stiverson) Hookham. He grew up in the Clarinda area and graduated from Clarinda High School in 1940. Following high school he worked for area farmers and hauled coal. Pete then worked for the Coca Cola Plant in Clarinda and was transferred to the plant in Grand Island, Nebraska. While in Grand Island, he met his future wife, Jane. On June 14, 1943, he was united in marriage to Rhea "Jane" Farmer. Pete served his country in the United States Army 1943-1946 during World War II.
Following his discharge from the Army, Pete and Jane moved back to Clarinda where he worked again at the Coca Cola plant and then worked at Page & Hill Company. Pete then worked at the Lisle Corporation for thirteen years; retiring in 1985. He was a life time member of the Amvets and American Legion.
Pete and Jane loved to dance, enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling. He also enjoyed doing volunteer work and having coffee with friends. Pete and Jane wintered in Texas for twenty five years and enjoyed the activities and their Texas friends.
Preceding Pete in death were his parents; three sisters, Ruth Hookham, Esther Kent and Marjorie Johnson.
Survivors include his wife Jane Hookham of Clarinda; brother, Charles Hookham and wife Marcia of Clarinda, nephew Gary Hookham and wife Sandy of Clarinda; niece, Rosemary McCollum and husband Dave of Lees Summit, Missouri; niece, Phyllis Snyder and husband Richard of Arvada, Colorado; nephew, Richard Johnson and wife Joyce, Clarinda; nephew, Bob Kent of Lakewood, California; many grandnieces, grandnephews; other relatives and many friends.
Pete was very friendly and well respected. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. His memory will live on in their hearts. May God grant comfort and peace to those who mourn his passing
014Cody William Squires was born September 20, 1989 in Pocahontas, Iowa; the only son to Chester and Sherry (Hawks) Squires. Cody grew up in the Pocahontas area until later on his family moved to Shenandoah. Cody's daughter, Zoey was born November 16, 2011 in Shenandoah, Iowa. He enjoyed spending time with Zoey, his nephew Isaac and Jacelyn Huntley. Cody treasured his family and friends and the time spent with them. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, drawing and listening to music.

Cody passed away on September 26, 2012, in Omaha, Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Mahlon, Jr. and Marie Squires; maternal grandparents William and Ruth Hawks; and several aunts and uncles.

Cody is survived by his parents Chester and Sherry Squires; sisters: Lacy Squires and fiancé Joe Moeller of Shenandoah, Iowa and Kayla Squires and significant other Austin Terry of Essex, Iowa; daughter Zoey Michelle Ross and significant other Shelby Ross both of Prairie City, Iowa; many aunts, uncles, nephew Isaac Baker, and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Cody will be held 10:00 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2012 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with burial in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the family.

015Mary Kathryn Esser was born on May 11, 1922 in Watson, Missouri. She was the daughter of William and Anna Mary Kathryn (Maness) Holmes.

Mary attended school in Watson. On June 1, 1943 she married Roy Esser in Maryville, Missouri, and they became parents of four children. Roy farmed in the Watson area, and Mary was a busy farm wife.

Mary passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the Pleasant View care center in Rock Port at the age of 90.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Roy; brothers, Leland, Leo, and Ray Holmes; half brother, Lee Maness; sisters, Eva Schroeder and Mary Lee Allgood; and half sister, Birdie Barnhart.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Gary Hughes of Rock Port; sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Wayne Esser of Rock Port, Leland and Judy Esser of Vermillion, South Dakota, and Richard and Kathy Esser of Watson; sister-in-law, Leola Holmes of Rock Port; six grandchildren and their spouses, Christy and Mark Lytle, Amy Matzen, Tabatha and Adam Meyer, Morie and Mike Vanderslice, Shae and Justin Neumeister, and Chance Esser; and 10 great grandchildren, Nicole, Paige and Preston Lytle, Ashley, Ryan and Jake Matzen, Tyler Armknecht, Colby and Austin Vanderslice, and Cory Neumeister.

Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, and bird watching.

Services were held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 10:30 am at the Watson Baptist Church.  Burial was held at High Creek Cemetery, and memorials may be directed to the cemetery

Edna Pearl (Ray) Close was born Sept. 21, 1917 in Nishnabotna, Missouri, the daughter of Nicholas Jerome Ray and Edna (Christian) Ray. Edna Pearl preferred to be called E.P. She grew up in rural Atchison County, living on various farms with her family and attended Nishna, Elkdale and Daleview schools.

She met Anthony Lewis “Philip” Close while they both were attending Daleview High School. They were classmates and graduated from high school in 1935. They were united in marriage on April 9, 1939 at the Methodist-Episcopal Church in Oregon, Missouri. To this union two children were born, Peggy Jo and Philip Ray.

E.P. and Phil lived on the Anthony Lewis and Anne (Lord) Close farm until May 23, 1946, when the home was destroyed by a tornado. Phil and E.P. Purchased a home from the Hiram True family and had it moved to the location where it stands today, directly north of St. Oswald's Episcopal Church in rural Skidmore, Missouri.

E.P. was a member of St. Oswald's-in-the-Fields Episcopal church. She and Phil enjoyed playing pitch, and they were members of a square dancing club for many years. In addition, they were lifetime members of the Falls City Elks Club and enjoyed ballroom dancing. Their dancing was a wonderful part of their togetherness.

Immediately following high school graduation E.P. was offered a shoe modeling job in St. Louis; her shoe size was 5AA. She turned the offer down and remained in the Dale Township area her entire life. Over the years she enjoyed being a farmer's wife. She raised chickens, sheep, a vegetable garden, several flower gardens, and cooked many meals for hired men and family members that helped work the farm. She was always requested to bring her famous salmon salad and her banana salad to many family events and the annual Harvest Festival event at St. Oswald's-in-the-Fields. She had a love for cross-stitching and made many lovely quilts for immediate family members. She had a special fondness for her dog and her calico cat.

Survivors include her daughter, Peggy Kruse and husband Larry of Glenwood, Iowa; her brother, Dr. Dean Ray and sister-in-law Natalie of Sun City West, Arizona; four grandsons, David and Brian Kruse of Omaha, Nebraska, Christopher Close of Plattsburg, Missouri and Brian Close of Roland Park, Kansas; seven great grandchildren, Alex Kruse, son of Brian Kruse, Riley and Hannah Kruse, children of David and Sharon Kruse, Caitlyn, Corey and Nathan Close, children of Chris and Shonda Close, and Carson Close, son of Brian and Joyce Close; along with many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Preceding E.P. In death were her husband, Anthony L. “Phil” Close (2012), her son, Philip Ray Close (1992); her parents, Nicholas (1956) and Edna Ray (1972); infant sister (1908); and two brothers, Harold Edwin “Cy” Ray (1976) and Raymond Donald Ray (1989).

Lorena Cloepfil was born to Olin and Gracie Maupin on July 19, 1921 on the family farm in Watson, Missouri.  She was the only child.

Lorena attended Star rural school and graduated from Hamburg High School in 1939.  Before getting married, she was employed as a ‘beautician’ (hair stylist) and worked for Sjulin Nurseries in Hamburg.

 On December 12, 1948 Lorena was united in marriage to Harold (Bob) Cloepfil, which lasted 50 years, at the Hamburg Baptist Church.  To this union, two children were born:  John (wife, Alejandra) and James (wife, Jan), who all reside in Shenandoah today. 

 The family lived and farmed east of Hamburg, Iowa until retirement.  They owned a home in the Lake of the Ozarks and after selling the farm, moved to Shenandoah.

 Lorena loved being a housewife on the farm.  She not only took care of her own parents but Bob’s parents as well, who lived next door, and helped take care of them in their senior years.  Lorena was ‘Worthy Matron' in the Eastern Star and was involved for many years. 

 Boating in the Lake of the Ozarks was one of her favorite pastimes, even though she couldn’t swim.   Lorena had always enjoyed life with lots of laughter, which she believed was the secret to long life. She never knew a stranger, always had a compliment for everyone she met, and loved little children.

 Lorena passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at a Shenandoah care center at the age of 91.

 Other survivors include three grandsons, Evan (wife, Michelle) and Dylan Cloepfil of Liberty, Missouri, Dan Shough (wife Tara) of Pompano Beach, Florida; and two great grandchildren, Regan and Aiden Shough.

 Graveside services and inurnment was held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 4, 2012, at Mount Zion Cemetery near Hamburg, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Shenandoah Food Pantry

Genevieve J. Grable was born on June 5, 1922 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She was one of two daughters of R.L. and Maude B. (Booth) Squires.

   Genevieve graduated from Brookfield High School in Brookfield, Missouri. She then graduated from Iowa Western Community College with a nursing degree. She worked as a nurse at George C. Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, Community Hospital in Fairfax, Missouri, Shenandoah Community Hospital in Shenandoah, Iowa, the Yuma Regional Medical Center in Yuma, Arizona, and as a private care nurse.

   On March 6, 1943 she married John Wyley “Jack” Grable in St. Joseph, Missouri. They became parents of two children. Jack passed away in 2010.

   Genevieve passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Community Hospital in Fairfax at the age of 90.

   She was preceded in death by her parents.

   Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John “Johnny” and Amy Grable of Yuma, Arizona, and their children, Tiffanni Connell, Tony Drake, Kelly Willis, John James Grable, Matthew Garay, and Janie Lee; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Dennis Golden of Sidney, Iowa and their children, Brandy Perdew, Alyssa Haggerty and Cody Johnson; sister, Ann Risser of Aurora, Colorado; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Nauman of Mound City, Missouri; nieces and nephews, including Billy Nauman of Rock Port, Missouri, and Bonita Haer of Craig, Missouri; several great grandchildren; and roommate, Dora Routh of Mound City.

   Genevieve enjoyed roller skating and ice skating, and playing dominoes. She liked to jitterbug to Glenn Miller’s “In The Mood.” Genevieve was a member of the Linden Church.

019Honor Elizabeth McLaren, daughter of James Blockley and Margaret Louise (Cole) Scott, was born on November 22, 1918 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She passed away on Sunday, August 12, 2012 surrounded by her loving family at the Shenandoah Medical Center following a brief illness.
Her early life was spent in Philadelphia. Her family later moved to Chicago, Illinois were she attended the Chicago Public Schools. On January 15, 1944 Honor was united in marriage to the love of her life, John McLaren, in Chicago. Following their marriage they made their home in Belvidere, Illinois. Honor worked for awhile as a secretary in Chicago until becoming a full-time homemaker to her husband, John and two sons, Ian and Rob. The family eventually moved to Shenandoah, Iowa, where John worked with Lake's Nurseries.
She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church in Shenandoah. Honor loved her Scottish Terrier dogs. She also enjoyed bird watching and a keen interest in lighthouses. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family as her family was her greatest joy and treasure.
Preceding Honor in death were her parents; brother, Peter Scott; two brothers-in-law, Hank Herula and Jim Gillono; sister-in-law, Grace McLaren; daughter-in-law, Valerie Smith McLaren; and a nephew, Jimmy Herula.

020Donna Joyce Nelson, the daughter of Ray and Fern (Brown) Stambaugh, was born December 30, 1932, near Coin, Iowa on the Stambaugh family farm. She passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at the Select Specialty Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 26 days.

Donna was raised on the family farm near Coin. She graduated from Coin High School with the class of 1950. Donna continued her education at Iowa Western Community College, Clarinda, Iowa, receiving her teaching certificate. Her first several years of teaching were at Macedonia, IA, and then at Exira, IA. Donna was united in marriage to Dwight G. Nelson on February 12, 1955 in Coin, IA. For 30 years, they made their home and raised their family on a farm south of Red Oak. During this time, she taught school at Coburg, Essex, and in Red Oak at the Junior High School, and later at Inman Elementary School. While teaching, in the summer months, she attended Northwest Missouri State University earning her Bachelor's degree in Education and Master's degree in Special Education. In 1991, Donna and Dwight moved to the Lindquist Nelson century farm at Nyman and she retired from teaching in 2007. She was a member of Fremont Lutheran Church in Nyman. Donna was active with the Order of Eastern Star in Red Oak, having served as Worthy Matron, Grand Representative to Arkansas in 1970, and was a District Grand Deputy for the Order of Rainbow for Girls. She was a past member of White Shrine in Shenandoah, IA. Family was central to Donna's life; she treasured her parents, children and grandchildren and spent as much time as she could with them, nurturing and providing guidance. She also enjoyed reading and embroidery sewing, along with researching and studying local history and genealogy.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Christopher Douglas Nuckolls.

Donna is survived by her husband, Dwight G. Nelson of rural Red Oak, IA; children: Dwight Nelson Jr. and wife Dawn of rural Red Oak, IA; Mary Auten and husband Rick of rural Clarinda, IA; and Karen Nelson and husband Tom Mahr of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren: Joseph Nelson, Jennifer Nelson, Jeremy Nelson and wife Nichole, Dustin Nuckolls and wife Becky, Ashlee Nuckolls, Aaron Mahr and Nicholas Mahr; 6 great-grandchildren: Emma and Macey Nuckolls, Brayden and Caydence Johnson, Jaykob and Lillie Nelson; and brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Lois Stambaugh of Denver, CO; nieces and nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

021Mildred (Berringer) Greenlee was born October 25, 1916 in Clarinda, Iowa; the daughter of Vern and Lou (Jackson) Berringer. Mildred grew up in the Clarinda area and graduated from high school there. She married Charles Greenlee on July 27, 1938 and to this union were born three children: Merrill, Mariedith and Marvis.

Mildred passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at Hillcrest Hospice in Bellevue, Nebraska. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Charles and brother Jack Berringer.

022Joyce Ann Woodruff was born in Shambaugh, Iowa to Henry Woodruff and Lucille (Linebaugh) Woodruff. She was married to Darrell Parrott July 11, 1954 until his death in 1980. Joyce was a member of the First Christian Church, Clarinda, and a deacon there for 15 years. She was a phone operator at the Clarinda State Hospital and a member of the D.A.R. Joyce was married to Ralph Crawford in 1982 and divorced in 2004. She enjoyed her special dog companions, Ceasar and Sophie
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Darrell Parrott, son Terry Parrott, and sister Ruth Haley.

Richard Ross Trucks, 72, passed away September 28, 2012 in Corning, Iowa. Richard was born on September 2, 1940 in Carroll, Iowa to Hazel Kathleen Rhodes and Gurney Trucks. On January 14, 1968 Richard married Patricia Ann Davis of Grinnell, Iowa. They began farming near Searsboro, Iowa in 1970, then bought their current farm west of Lenox in 1974.

Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Craig (Donna), Heidi (David) Ames and Galen (Trudy); and grandchildren, Halley, Grant, Devon and Beatrice; sister, Mary Jane Alborn.

He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Beth Ellen, Shirley and Marilyn.

024 Linda Ann Lindemeyer-Bolton, November 7, 1956 - September 23, 2012, beloved daughter of Bedford locals "Jack" and Phyllis Lindenmeyer, passed unexpectedly, but peacefully Sunday morning at her home in South lake Tahoe, California. In accordance with her wishes there will not be a public service. However, family members nad close friends will try to gather to share their memories, most likely over the holidays, which was one of Linda's favorite times of the year.

Linda is survived by both parents, 14 grandchildren, six children, four siblings and many cousins, friends and her loving husband Jim.

Darlene Ruth Hogg Stout, 90, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, passed away on August 3,2012. Born in Blockton, Iowa, Darlene was the daughter of the late Clarence and Beulah (Drennen) Hogg.
Darlene taught country school, worked in the banking for 25 years, and spent her last years working at the Christmas Store in Harbour Town. She was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution, a 25 year member of The Order of the First Families of Rhode Island and Providence Planta­tions, and a life member of the 57* Bomb Wing.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles Sanford Stout, her parents Clarence Ballou and Beulah Mae Hogg, her sister Helen Hodel, and grandson Corey Williams. She leaves behind her daughter Charlene (Don) Elder, her son Craig (Pamela) Stout, both of Hilton Head Island; grandchil­dren Kim Elder of Atlanta, Georgia, Darren (Michelle) Elder, of Tampa, Florida, Mitchell (Stephanie) Elder of Gallion, Ohio; Ballou Stout of Hilton Head Island, and Annabelle Stout of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Great-grandchildren include Logan Elder of Tampa, Florida, and Lilly Grace Elder of Gallion, Ohio.

Samuel Calvin Cossins, 78, Maryville, Missouri, formerly of Sheridan, Missouri died on Friday, November 2, 2012, at Parkdale Manor Care Center in Maryville.

Born April 14, 1934 in Sheridan, Missouri, Sam was the son of the late Clarence Arthur and Dorothy Bell (Haun) Cossins.

He was united in marriage to Ella Mae (Jackson), April 1, 1961 in Sheridan. To this union two children were born Lee Edward and Liza Beth.

Sam was a member of the Sheridan Christian Church and a lifelong farmer.

Preceding him in death was his brother, Ora Edward Cossins.

Surviving are his wife Ella Mae, of the home, Maryville; one son, Lee Edward (Maria) Cossins, Guilford, Missouri; one daughter, Liza Beth Atkinson, Republic, Missouri; three sisters, Annetta McMillian, Des Moines, IA, Barbara Carlock, Albany, MO and Sarah Windsor, Chillicothe, Missouri and four grandchildren.

Mr. Cossins body has been cremated.

A memorial service will be held at 7 PM, Monday, November 12, 2012 at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services from 6-7 PM. Interment will be in the Sheridan Cemetery at a later date.

Virgil Gray, 78, of Rolla, Missouri passed away suddenly on November 2, 2012.

Virgil was born June 2, 1934 to Harold and Wilma Gray in Maryville, Missouri.

Virgil served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He spent many years as a plumber and pipefitter. Over the years, Virgil enjoyed many interests, including: Nascar, Professional Bull Riding, gardening, antiques and church. Virgil also loved his pets. He was a hard worker, took pride in anything he did and was a very proud and stubborn man and will be missed by many.

He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Harold, Jr.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Mary of Rolla; his sister, Louise (Laton) Goodson of Maryville; his brother, Jim Gray of St. Joseph, Missouri; four children, Sherry (Ray Bracken) Black of Maryville, Bob (Colleen) Gray of Glenwood, Iowa, Terry (Barb) Gray of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Mary (Les) Lininger of Kirbyville, Missouri; three step-children, Bill, Sally and Robert Peters, all of Colorado. Also many cousin, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Per Virgil's wishes, cremation was performed by St. Louis Cremation.

Martha Sandau, 90 of Maryville, Missouri died on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at Parkdale Manor Care Center in Maryville.

Born Monday, July 31, 1922 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Eva Kemph Wright. She was united in marriage to the late Roland Sandau,May 12, 1943 in Harrington, Nebraska.

She served as a Cpl in the Army from 1943 until 1945. She was a Veteran of World War II.

She was a member of First United Methodist.

Surviving are sons, John Griffith Sandau, Maryville, MO, David Rolland Sandau, Pompano Beach, FL, Edward Samuel Sandau, Sioux Falls, SD and James Nathan Sandau, San Jose, CA; a brother, Edward Wright, Denver, CO; and a sister Eva Ann Buzecky, Madison, WI.

Mrs. Sandau has been cremated. Inurment will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery at Minneapolis, Minnesota

Clora Evelyn Keever, 97, Maryville, Missouri, died Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at Parkdale Manor Care Center, Maryville.

Clora was born May 14, 1915, in rural Worth County, Missouri to Charles Samuel and Myrtle Dean Harris.

A graduate of Parnell High School , she and her husband were owners of Maryville Sewing Machine Exchange and later was a clerk at Holt Supply and Watkins True Value Stores in Maryville.

Clora married Edward O. Keever on June 25, 1939, in Maryville, Missouri.

Mrs. Keever was a member of the First Baptist Church, Maryville.

Preceding in death were her husband and brother Merril "Jack" Harris, and three sisters Gladys Blake, Zella Herndon, and Leota Lyle.

Survivors include son Douglas (Caroline) Keever, Maryville, and daughter Linda (Larry) Rice, Ainsworth, NE, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and one great great grand daughter.

Visitation will be 7-8:00 PM, Friday, November 2, 2012 at the Price Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville.

Richard Elden England, 77, Maryville, Missouri, died October 29, 2012 at his home in Maryville, Missouri.

Richard was born December 30, 1934, in Chillicothe, Missouri to Mont L. and Edna S. Croghan England.

A graduate of Chillicothe High School, Richard was in retail furniture and was co owner/operator of the Ginger Snap Company.

He married Shirley Baker September 13, 1958, in Chillocothe, Missouri.

He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Richard was a member of the Laura Street Baptist Church, Maryville, and also took part in many art festivals and Renaissance activities as the "Duke of Dink".

Preceding in death were his parents and one sister Elizabeth Ramsey, three brothers, Clifford, Stanley and Laverne England.

Survivors include his wife Shirley England of the home, daughters Joy England, Maryville,and Pebble England, Liberty, MO; a sister-in-law Alice Lee England, Bethany, MO; nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 2, 2012 at the Laura Street Baptist Church, Maryville, with the Reverend Paul McKim officiating.

Dr. Anita Adrich, 98, passed away in her home Sunday, October 28, 2012 in Bloomington, Indiana.

She was born September 20,  1914 in Elmo Missouri, the only child of Earl L. and Ethel M. Bailey Aldrich.

Gladys Jeanette Smock, 92, Maitland, Missouri, died Sunday, October 28, 2012, at Tiffany Heights Nursing Home, Mound City, Missouri.

Gladys was born March 3, 1920, in Harlem, Montana to Carey Pearl and Ruby Kniefer Hester.

A graduate of Maitland High School Jeanette was a farmwife and known by her family and closest friends as "Nonny" .

Jeanette married William Joseph Smock on September 5, 1942.

Jeanette was a member of the Maitland Christian Church for 70 years, Sunday School teacher for many years, Keenager Pinocle Club, and enjoyed handwork always making quilts and table cloths for someone.

PrecedingJeanette in death were her husband, parents, sister Neva Napier, great grand daughter Alicia Faith Koch.

Survivors include son Bob(Diane) Smock, Maitland, MO, and daughter Mary Coates, Saint Joseph, MO, Grandchildren Scott(Amber) Coates, Jennifer(Kyle) Koch, Josh(Jessie) Smock, Travis(Katie) Smock, and Chris(Elaina) Smock.

Great Grandchildren include Maddie Coates, Bailey Sipes, Tyson Koch, Dayne Koch, Tad Smock, Trent Smock, Joe Smock, Jon Smock, Josie Smock, Abigail Smock, Henry Smock and Ivan Smock.

James Abraham Faris, 78, Gretna, Nebraska died Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Alegent Creighton Health Midlands Hospital in Papillion, Nebraska

James was born on April 6, 1934 to Elmer and Elsie Faris in Maryville, MO. He grew up on a farm near Graham, MO.

He married Karen Hanna at the Maryville Methodist Church, December 23, 1956.

He attended Northwest Missouri University and Louisiana State University. He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and then joined the Army Reserves.

Proceeding in death were his parents Elmer and Elsie Faris; Brothers Arthur Faris, Harold Faris, Leonard Faris, Adam Faris, Bryce Faris; Sisters Roberta Neff, Esther Granaman.

Survived by his wife Karen Faris; daughter Teresa Faris, sons Kristen (Jody) Faris, and Thomas Faris; Grandchildren Steven (Jamie) Faris, Michaela (Tony) Bernini, Ian Anderson, Karissa (Jim) Thompson, and Lauren Faris; Great-grandchildren Peighton Thompson, Ryder Liebentritt, Aryanna Petty, and Lucas Petty; His Brothers Edwin Faris and George Faris of Colorado, Sisters Marie Tatum, Neva Jones, and Sarah Dawson of Arizona; many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Jim enjoyed being a salesman on the road or in his store helping his customers with their paint, carpet or hardware needs. His lifelong hobby was playing and teaching golf. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends and always had a story to share.

Randy Steve Jones, 56, Maryville, Missouri, died Saturday, October 27, 2012, in Rosendale, Missouri.

Randy was born February 21, 1956, in Maryville, Missouri to Earl H. and Wanda Lavelle Tabor Jones.

A graduate of Maryville High School Randy had worked as a cook at the Cardinal Inn, Hitching Post, Hy-Vee, and Maryville Correction Center.

Randy was a member of the First Baptist Church, Maryville.

Preceding Randy in death were his parents and a sister Barbara Ann Crouse.

Survivors all of whom he loved very much include brother Larry Jones, Maryville, nieces Sheelah Lyle, Savannah, Missouri, Tracy Martin and Judy Jones, Houston, Texas, nephews Jason Jones, Maryville, Todd Crouch, Jefferson City, Missouri, Rusty Jones, San Antonio, Texas, aunts and uncles and cousins.

Loretta Florence Ebrecht, 81, Maryville, Missouri, died Sunday, October 14, 2012, at Golden Living Center, Maryville.

Loretta was born June 29, 1931, in Nodaway County, Missouri to Joseph Truman and Pauline Eva Cluster Wallace.

She married James Samuel Ebrecht, Jr., July 26, 1947, in Maryville, MO.

Loretta was a member of the Laura Street Baptist Chruch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim, (August 4, 1988), daughter Loretta Chase, brother Jackie Lee Wallace, step-father Dennis Wallace and a grandson Jerry A. Morlock Jr..

Survivors include: daughter Patty Morlock, Maryville; four sons James T. Ebrecht, Maryville, John R. (Bob) Ebrecht, Maryville, Dennis D. Ebrecht, Henryetta, Okalhoma, and Donald D. Ebrecht, Atchison, Kansas; four grandchildren of which she raised in her home, Marie, Rickie, Sam and Tim Doolin; twenty four grandchildren; thirty two great grand children and two great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-7 PM, Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at the Price Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 :00 PM, Wednesday, October 17 at Price Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville.
