In 1920, she came to Rock Port, Missouri to apprentice with a local millener, and after a year plied her trade for another year in St. Joseph before returning to Rock Port to open and run her own hat shop, The Vogue. Lela's lifelong spirit of independence persisted as she lived by herself until ill health commanded her move to Oakland, Iowa to be near her daughter, Beverly, Mrs. Romley Webb.
Lela loved her church. She was one of the oldest active members of the First Christian Church of Rock Port and was a former member of the Rock Port Sweet Adelines Chapter.
