Close

Hi Pat

My name is Margaret Greer and I live near Liverpool in England.

My great grandmother's brother Joseph Close emigrated to US in 1870 and settled in Dale, Atchison after his marriage in 1876.  He returned to England after the death of his wife Hannah Winter Close in 1910 and is buried in Westmorland, England

He raised his family of 6 children in Dale and it appears that some of his children and grandchildren remained in Atchison and surrounding counties until they died.

I have letters describing their day to day lives between 1910 and 1914 in Dale and Skidmore, Nodaway Co.

I'm very keen to find Joseph's descendants in US.

Someone on the Rootsweb MOATCHISON mailing list sent me the following extracts from the 'Gone but not forgotten'  book and I'm wondering if any of your volunteers has access to obituary notices for the later deaths * which could lead me to their living families

In Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Clark Township (Section 26, Township 64, Range
40), which is a mile and a half southeast of Fairfax, Atchison County,
Missouri, there are:

Howard Cecil Close - b. Feb. 27, 1913 - d. May 22, 1919 - age 6 yr - son of
Jarvis H. & Lena Brunk Close

Jarvis H. Close - b. 1882 - d. Nov. 26, 1918 - w. Lena Brunk Close

*Lena Brunk Close - b. Jan 12, 1882 - d. Jan 5, 1963 - h. Jarvis H. Close -
dau. of Henry Brunk

In Walkup Grove Cemetery, Dale Township (Section 35, Township 64, Range 39),
which is 7 miles east and 1 mile south of Fairfax, Atchison County,
Missouri, there are:

An unmarked grave on the Joseph Close lot

Beatrice H. Close - b. Sept 30, 1878 - d. July 21, 1934 - age 56 yr - h.
Charles William Close - dau. of Edward & Jane Tyson Huggins

Charles Ernest Close - b. Jan. 21, 1915 - d. Apr. 12, 1918

*Charles William Close - b. 1885 - d. May 29, 1966 - age 80 yr - w. Beatrice
H. Huggins - son of Anthony & Anna Lord Close   Charles William is the son of Joseph Close's brother Anthony who returned to England in 1896 and died in 1900.  It appears that Charles stayed in the US with his relatives whereas his US born brother and sister are living with their mother in England on the 1901 census and died in the UK

Hanna Winter Close - b. 1852 - d. 1910 - h. Joseph Close (buried in England)

Infant Close - d. 1885 - buried on the Joseph & Hanna Winter Close lot

I've also found deaths of the following who were Joseph and Hannah's daughter in law and grandchildren:

Hattie Mae Lawrence Close died April 2 1960 at Fairfax and is buried at the Tharp Memorial cemetery, Holt Co

Sarah Evelyn Close ( New) died Jan 23 1994 at Fairfax and buried at Tharp

Lawrence Richard Close ( "Beany") died July 24 1992 at Maryville, Nodaway Co and buried at Quitman cemetery, Atchison Co. He married Edna Graves in 1936.

I'm happy to pay any costs involved and would appreciate any help you can give me.

Many regards

Covell -

My great-great grandfather Richard Covell and his wife Melinda moved to
northwest Missouri in the late 1800s.  The Chisholm papers in Salt Lake
City, Utah state that their mailing address was Mound City but other
information connects them to the Fairfax area.  Their older children were
married in Illinois in 1866 and 1871 but my great grandfather was married in
King City in 1878.  I have been unable to locate records of any kind for
Richard and Melinda, however, their sons Jonathan Emerson Covell and R.
Leonard Covell were living in St. Joseph about 1903-05.

Would you please check the Atchison County records from 1876 to 1903 for
these family members:
Richard Covell
Melinda Covell
Sarah M. Covell
Melvina Covell Cooper
Harriet Covell
Seth Covell
Jonathan Emerson Covell
Stephen Andrew Covell
R. Leonard Covell
Ella Covell Lyons.

I am especially anxious to find burial records for Richard and Melinda.
Thanks so much for your help. Irene Harvey - iharvey@kc.stklaw.com

Dailey -

I am searching for information on my G G Grandfather and G G Grandmother. John Daily, born 7 December 1822, probably in Clark County, Indiana. Died 7 July 1867, buried in Linden Cemetery, Rockport, Atchison County, Missouri.

He married Mary Maria Overman, 12 February 1846, she was born 8 February 1830, Charleston, Clark County, Indiana, daughter of Joseph Overman SR. and Jane Covert. She died 22 March 1874, Rockport, Atchison County, Missouri.

John Daily enrolled in the 58th Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia, and his son Charles is listed with the 43rd Regiment, Company I during the Civil War.

John Daily's parents are in question and a Will or Recorded Deed may provide a clue.

Mary Maria may have married a "Bayne" after John's death and this is yet to be verified. I have the marriages for their children which include Tibbets, Oslin, Vest, Collins, Moore, and Kennedy families of the Rockport area, 1866 through 1898 The family file currently exceeds 1500 individuals back to 1860. I will share what I have. DailyWL@aol.com

    Patricia,

Am I correct in understanding there are no death records in Atchison County
before 1910? I am trying to locate a record for Phillip Deel who is buried in
Atchison county and died in 1933, but the state can find no record of him. I
have been to the cemetery so I know he is there (can't tell you which one,
but it is near Westboro). My great-grandfather and grandmother, Johan Diehl
and Suzanne Diehl are buried in that same cemetery and died in 1864 and 1869
respectively. Would the county records help me at all. Thank you.

Derry -

Hello Pat! I found a reference in the Atchison County MO Queries 1998 that I believe is my family...

It is the one online re: DERRY/HOPPING, it says: Will correspond with anyone working on the following lines-DERRY/HOPPING. These families came out of Fulton Co.,Illinois and they were in Atchison Co around West Boro and Tarkio. Will gladly share materials. Signed PAT KNOWLES.

My problem is.... I e-mailed and it came back to me, old e-mail I guess, from 1998. Could you please help me? (Would this person please update e-mail address? Pat)

Jacob Washington DERRY born 15 Nov 1860 was my great grandfather, he married a Bell ADDINGTON born 1867, they married on 13 September 1883 and had a family in Atchison County ,coming to WA state by 1898 (I have most of their children's names on this end, some born in MO, some born in WA state, one of them was my grandmother Manilla born August 26, 1898.

I have a copy of the mortgage of 1898, Jacob and Bell, wife, and Lucinda DERRY. On this end the family spells the name DERRY as DERREY, but it is spelled these ways and others as well.

I sure hope that you can tell me about the DERRY'S that lived in Atchison County. I am so looking forward to your answer, would love to find out my roots and am so grateful for your time.

LITTLE / CRAWFORD around Blanchard, MO research.

Dear Pat O'Dell,
A year ago this month a friend found a newspaper obituary for a Great
Uncle of mine.  He had died at Clay City, Indiana.  (Located in the
west-central part of Indiana.)  That is 20 miles from where I was born and
live now at Poland, IN.  It was a surprise to learn his home and family had
been near Blanchard, Missouri.
His name was Wilson S. LITTLE  b.  Apr. 1843 in Ohio  d.11 Dec. 1919.
His first wife was Phebe (BROWN) LITTLE  b.      1842 or 44 in Ohio  d.
before Nov. 1899.  This is the date he married his second wife in Clay
County, Indiana.
From the 1880 census and the obituary I believe the children were:
        James L.  b. @  1867 in Missouri.
Mary Annie  b. @ 1870 (married name DUBOIS  in Almena, Kan. in1919).
Mary R. b. @ 1871 (married name CRAWFORD living in Kansas City, Kansas  in
1919).
Charles E. b. @  1876 ( was living at Blanchard in 1919).  As was his
sister   C. E.   b. @ 1879 ( was listed as Mrs. E. O. CRAWFORD in the obit in
1919).

If you could research this family any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lownes -

My name is Jim Dewey and I live in California. My Great Great Grand Parents are Caleb Pancoast Lownes and Sophronia Applegate. They were married in Atchison County, Missouri on 6 Nov. 1845. The records there that I have been able to find list their names as Caleb P. Lownes and Sophrona Applegate. Census records that I have been able to find List Sophronia's Parents as having been born in Kentucky and Sophronia having been born in Indiana in 1828. I have been searching for her parents for years and have come up blank. My question is this: do you have access to the actual marriage certificate and does it have any information about Sophronia's parents? mimisapo@sbcglobal.net

Manley

Hi Pat,

I desperately need help in locating my grtgrandparents who lived in Atchison County.

Charles Roswell Manley: born-July 1845 in Nodaway Co., died-July 1900 from drowning in a well; married Nancy Ann York-Aug. 4, 1864 in Nodaway Co., she died April 16, 1891 in Fairfax. They lived in various townships in Atchison such as Benton, Fairfax, and Tarkio. What I am trying to find is their death records and where they are buried. I have tried several sources but no luck as of yet. I have even been to Fairfax and Rockport and Tarkio searching various cemeteries and have found no records. I hope you or someone else can help me. It would be nice to know where they are "at rest".

I also would like to know where two of their children are buried. John William Manley born about 1867, died March 13, 1893 in Nishnabotna (Western Union Telegram), and married Cora Mae Batson March 13, 1893 at Rockport, she died in Fresno, Calif.

Mandy Bell Manley born Jan. 1870 in Benton Township, died before 1890; she married Joshua H. Baker Sept. 4, 1886 and had a son named Henry. I have hit a brick wall with this family and hope you can help.

I recently wrote to Letha Mowry in Nodaway and she searched that area for me to see if any of them were buried with other Manleys in Elmo and Lamar Cemetery. She suggested I contact Julia Bennington in Atchison for assistance. I did not see her name on the Atchison web page so I am writing to you. I hope that someone can help me in locating my grtgrandparents and uncle and aunt. Thank you for your time and help and God Bless You.

    Hi,

I need help - I am in a desperate quandry trying to verify info regarding my Grandmother Selenda
Mertisha Manley, born April 1881 at Sweet Home, Mo to C. R. Manley and Nancy York. She was married Feb 14, 1895 to George or John Ross (no info) but he died before 1900 in Atchison Co. I have written several times for help but, so far, no one has been able to find any info. The only George buried at Home Cemetery in Tarkio is a George Ross buried next to Waughs. My
grandmother was listed on the 1900 MO census as a widow. She next married a man named
Francis M. Waugh in 1901 or thereabouts in Tarkio. She did have 2 children with Ross, a boy
named Roy and a girl named Lenora both born in Tarkio. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi, I don't know if you have access to marriage
records from the 1870-1880's but I was looking for
marriages for the girls of Abraham R. Mitchell.  They
were Fannie Marian (or just Marian), Frances E.,
Louisa Jane, Sarah A., Mary Emma or just Emma, and
Minnie.  They had two brothers, William and James.  I
think they never married.

Thank you for any help,

Schroeder - John Henry Schroeder 1858-1903 from Germany to Atchison Co. married to Anna Maria Blankemeier 1870-1945. They were married and died in Westboro, Mo so assuming they were also buried there.

They had four childern there, Anna Maria who married a Murren and had a large family, John Fredrick who married twice and had a number of childern, I believe his wives names were Dena and Violet and need his childerns names and who their mothers were.

After Mr Schroeders death Anna remarried to Johann Mathaus Krome and had three sons, William, Henry and Charles. What became of them?

Anna Maria Katherine Blankemeier's parents were John E.H. Blankemeir 1843-1914 who was buried Westboro, Mo. and Anna Maria Engel Siegman 1839-1928. She died at Westboro, Mo.

They raised four childern, Christopher who died in Nebraska, "Elise" Anna Maria Katherine who married twice (same information as above) , "Hannah" Johanna married Ernest Sunderman, Mary who married Rockport, Mo. to Gus Luedtke and Louise who married Henry Sunderman.

Any help on any of there families would be greatly appreciated, thank you..

Whitehead -

Dear Pat,

I am researching my paternal grandfather, John Underwood Whitehead(b. 1851 Raytown, TN,; m. Alpha Melvina Dykes 1903 Jeraldstown, Greene Co.,TN) who came to Taylor Co. from Greene Co., TN, sometime after 1904 when their first child was born, had six more children there, then moved to Atchison co., MO, after 1920, when their last child was born.  John died  Mar 1926 and was buried in Clarinda, IA.  From your newspaper page, I found his obit., and names that might be his three sisters, Lula, Effie, and Bertha Whitehead, as well as numerous other Whiteheads who may be mine.  I would like to ask for any other information that anyone might have on Taylor Co. Whiteheads-this is the first real break I have had on the Whitehead side, as his info ends on his death cert., with no parents names.

Please e-mail me at:  morda02@yahoo.com if anyone has any info.

Thank you for any help.
