Griffey, Bernice Lillian Thomsen -

Bernice Lillian Griffey was born on Oct 12,1920 at North Bend, Nebr. She was the eldest daughter of Paul and Alma Thomsen. She died at Methodist Hospital, Omaha, Nebr. Friday, May 29,1998 at the age of 77.
On graduation night tragedy struck the Thomsen family when Paul suddenly died. Left with no income, Alma moved the three daughters into town where Alma and Bernice worked as a cook and waitress just to put food on the table.
Bernice and Smiley Griffey eventually met, married and had two daughters and two sons, Edith Hast, Lorrie Griffey Cobb, Mitchell Griffey, Michael Griffey. Smiley, a trucker at the time, was gone a lot. Bernice realized restaurant work offered a limited future, so in her early 30s she enrolled in college. Working full time as a waitress, carrying as many college units as possible and caring for four children, life was challenging.
That hard earned degree from Midland College was a blessing to Bernice as well as those kids lucky enough to be her students. Teaching came naturally to Bernice who truly enriched the lives of many. Throughout the years, students have sent letters, photos of their kids, and stopped her in the street, just to say "hi".
Bernice was involved with many professional associations over her long teaching career. She served as the president of AAUW and in later years was secretary for the Omaha Women'sClub, and was a long time board member for the Retired Teachers Association. Bernice was the ultimate professional.
In the early 1970s Smiley retired from Singer Sewing Machine Co. After a lifetime of living in Nebraska, Bernice and Smiley made a big move to Missouri. More or less starting over, it was an era of new friends and for Bernice, a new teaching environment with the Fairfax School district. Mid 1980s brought retirement for her as well as the loss of Smiley to cancer. Alone on their small farm, Bernice moved back to Omaha, Nebr. near Edie and Steve. Never to be bored, she was off and running with the Associations and church activities. Her aunt, Elva Meisel, a best friend and buddy, became her constant companion, and they were inseparable.
Even after moving to Elkhorn Manor, she remained active, assuming the position of president of the Residents Council. She enjoyed crafts, learned to play bridge and socializing.
Most of all Bernice was a good mother who lived for her children. Over the years it seemed like no matter how many friends the kids drug home, there was always room for extras at the dinner table. Her door was always open, no formalities like a phone call ahead were required at the Griffey home, love for family and friends was plentiful.
Services were held at the Reichmuth Funeral Home, Inc. in Elkhorn, Nebr. on Monday, June 1, with Rev. Sacia Young officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, North Bend, Nebr.
Survivors include the four children: Edith Hast and husband, Steve, Omaha, NE; Lorrie Cobb and husband, Jim, Northridge, Calif; Mitchell   Griffey and Wife, Judv. Fairfax; Michael Griffey and wife, Betty, Fremont, NE; special aunt, Elva Meisel, Omaha, NE., 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.

Renken, Claus John Jr - Claus John Renken, Jr., 84, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, engineer, and ham radio enthusiast, checked in on the weather net for the final time on May 27, 2017. Each Friday evening for decades, John hosted ham radio enthusiasts on a world wide net, exchanging information about weather, crops, and life with friends spread across the thousands of miles, joined together by a love of technology and a curiosity about, well, everything.

John was a man of many passions, all enduring, but the most important was his devotion and love for Virginia, his wife of 61 years, who survives him. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Stephen (Dianne) and sister in law Shirley Renken. John is survived by brother Tim Renken, and sisters Anne Marshall of Columbia, Missouri, and Elizabeth (Terry) Boone, St. Louis, Missouri. He is also survived by daughters Julie (Blake) Hurst, of Tarkio, Missouri, and Laura Renken (Mark Lampe) of St. Louis, and grandchildren Lee (Ryan) Harms of Westboro, Ann (Matt) Schlueter of Tarkio, and Ben (Kenzie) of Kansas City, Missouri. John had 6 great-grandchildren, Aaron, Lizzie, and Josh Schlueter, Gabe and Abbie Harms, and Levi Hurst.

John graduated from the University of Missouri with a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, served in United States Navy, and began his professional career as a researcher in nuclear materials testing at the Argonne National Laboratories in the Chicago area. In 1970 the family returned to Jefferson City, Missouri, to be near their families and to pursue their dream of owning a farm. John worked as a television repairman and as a nuclear power specialist and auditor with the Missouri Public Service Commission. The couple eventually settled on farm near California, Missouri. John and Virginia planted an orchard on the farm, and for many years sold apples to loyal customers throughout central Missouri.

John was an accomplished musician, playing the clarinet and saxophone in orchestras, bands, and church groups for all of his life. He taught himself to play the violin in his seventies, and played the organ as well. He was always and everywhere surrounded by music.

He was also interested in astronomy, converting a former dairy barn on his farm to an observatory, a feature not often found on farms in Moniteau County. He was an avid gardener, loved raising cattle, and was devoted to soil conservation on his farm.

John was always busy with a project. Repairing barns, remodeling his and Virginia’s farm home, building fence, or designing a new and improved antenna to boost his radio reception all occupied his time and considerable energies. His projects always had several things in common: they paid little attention to style or to convention, but they were built to last. Through tornadoes, earthquakes, or any other imaginable catastrophe, natural or man-made, his family fully expects that the works of Johnny will survive.

John was sometimes wrong, but never in doubt. He was devoted to Virginia, caring for “Ginger” when time and age reversed their roles, and he was a faithful and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He had little use for babies, but infinite patience for children, especially curious children. He followed current events not at all, had no respect for any politician, and kept up with news in Germany and soap operas in Mexico in order to practice his German and his Spanish. He had a deep and abiding faith in God, of the Lutheran persuasion, and he has left us for a far better place. May he rest in peace.

Renken, Virginia Ann Froerer - Virginia Ann (Froerer) Renken was born on Christmas Day, 1933, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Her father was a civil engineer, and the family moved from Scottsbluff, where Mr. Froerer helped design the national monument there, to Kansas City, and finally to Jefferson City Missouri, where he helped design the bridge spanning the Missouri River. Virginia and her family lived on Greenberry Road, down the street from a family named Renken, whose oldest son was named John. Virginia graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Missouri with a degree in mathematics. She and John Renken were married on June 5th, 1955.

The couple began their married life in Lemont, Illinois, where both of their daughters were born. They returned to Missouri in 1971, first living in Jefferson City and then moving to a farm in Moniteau County. Virginia worked at the Missouri Farm Bureau, first in the finance department and then as Personnel Director. Virginia then began her second career, managing the Old Home Place Orchard and raising apples from the more than 800 trees that she and John planted. When John and Virginia purchased the farm it was worn down from erosion and neglect. Like every other home they lived in and cared for, the farm on Route T became a garden spot. John and Virginia restored their home place over 40 years of loving care, and after their family, improving the farm was a main source of satisfaction and pride.

Virginia passed away in Fairfax, Missouri, on June 28, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents and John, her husband of 61 years. She is survived by a brother, Dean Froerer, his wife Carolyn of Seattle, Washington, two daughters, Julie (Blake) Hurst of Tarkio, Missouri, and Laura Renken (Mark Lampe) of St. Louis, Missouri. Virginia is also survived by three grandchildren, Lee (Ryan) Harms and Ann (Matt) Schlueter of Tarkio, and Ben (Kenzie) Hurst of Kansas City, Missouri. Virginia has 6 great grandchildren: Abbie and Gabe Harms, Aaron, Lizzie, and Josh Schlueter, and Levi Hurst.

Pictures often fail to capture truth, but pictures of Virginia captured her essence. She and Johnny had a great romance, one only interrupted by his death a month before her passing, and that love, both given and received, was clear in every picture of Virginia. She loved her family and her farm; she and Johnny built a marriage that was a thing of beauty, a union that is and will always be an inspiration to everyone who had the good fortune and the blessing to share in that love and devotion. Ginger and Johnny are again one, and those they leave behind are better in every way for a love story that began so long ago on Greenberry Road.
