Dixon, Martha C. Rhoades Currier - Martha C. Dixon, the daughter of Albert and Susie Rhoades was born August 1, 1947, in Corning Missouri. At a very early age Martha was adopted by Melvin Curtis and Mona (Strong) Currier. She graduated from Mound City, High School in 1965, and attended one year at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, St. Joseph, Missouri.
Martha was united in marriage to David Benson Dixon. They made their home in North Carolina and raised two daughters, Pamela and Nancy. Martha has lived in the Rock Port, Missouri, area since 1991. She passed away on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port.
Martha was employed as a seamstress, waitress and in the cotton mills in North Carolina. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and playing cards. She loved to cook, and her fried chicken was her family’s favorite. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Martha is preceded in death by her parents, husband, David, and brothers and sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Wredt and her husband, Tony, Sabetha, Kansas, and Nancy Anderson, Rock Port; nine grandchildren, Christa McCoy and her husband, Josh, David Anderson, George Anderson, III, Kyle Bradley, Angelea Anderson, Derek Campfield, Layla Anderson, AhLeah Anderson, and Lance Anderson; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bertha and Voleen.

Crapson, Constance Joan "Connie" Harper - Constance Joan “Connie” (Harper) Crapson, 77, of Tarkio, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at the Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care center in Tarkio, after a two year courageous battle with cancer.
Connie was born April 16, 1933, in Ellsworth, Kansas, to Harry Eugene Harper and Jessie Maria (Bengston) Harper.
Preceding Connie in death were her parents and one sister, Elaine Harper Vaughan. Surviving are her Husband of 60 years, Leland Crapson, of the home; one daughter, Kathryn Francis, Vail, Iowa; three sons, the Reverend James W. Crapson, College Springs, Iowa, the Reverend Dr. Jeffrey Crafton, Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Paul T. Crafton, Seattle, Washington; one sister, Virginia Simmonds, Los Alamos, New Mexico; one brother, John Harper, Wichita, Kansas; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Connie was a strong leader, teacher, and believer in education as the liberating force in the lives of her students. She was an Honor Graduate at Tarkio College, Tarkio, Missouri, and had further study at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri; Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota; and The Institute for The Teaching of the French Language, Paris, France.
In a 31 year teaching career, Connie taught classes in art, and in the French and Spanish Language and Culture to students at Tarkio College, and students in the Tarkio, Craig, and Fairfax, Missouri schools. She was also known for the excellent creative Art Shows of her students.
As a Master Gardener, Connie was seen many spring and summer mornings working, feeding, watering, and talking to her beloved plants, flowers, and vegetables growing in her gardens.
Connie was selected “Tarkio Citizen of the Year” in 1997, and a “Special Citizen of the Year” in Tarkio in 2007, for her volunteer work in the Tarkio Community.
Connie was active in the Tarkio United Methodist Church, serving as a Church School Teacher, singing in the Church Choir, and using her talents as a Master Painter to paint murals of characters and events of the Bible on the walls of the Main Hall of the Church. This was a two-year project, and is an amazing display of teaching and learning about the history of the Christian Faith.
Connie’s legacy is her family, her friends, and the hundreds of students she loved and helped with their education.

VISITATION: 7:00 – 8:00 P.M., Friday, August 13, at the Fellowship Hall of Tarkio United Methodist Church.

Poppa, Cheryl Lynn Smith - Cheryl Lynn Poppa, the daughter of Ray Frank and Dorothy (Larson) Smith, was born on September 29, 1946, in Clarinda, Iowa. Cheryl graduated from Fairfax High School in 1964, and attended Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri for one year.
On June 6, 1965, Cheryl was united in marriage to Larry Dean Poppa in Rock Port, Missouri. They made their home in the Tarkio area their entire married life, and became the parents of three children, Randy, Traci and Michael.
Cheryl worked for the Community Hospital maternity ward, in Fairfax, Missouri, and for eight years at the Tarkio Academy. She was also the bookkeeper for Larry’s Repair. Most of all she loved to take care of her grandkids. Cheryl attended the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints Maryville Branch, where she was a very active member. Her church meant everything to her. Cheryl passed away on Monday, August 9, 2010, at Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Besides her parents, Cheryl is preceded in death by her granddaughter, Renee’ Elizabeth Poppa, and step-sister, Lynda Herron. Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Larry Poppa, of the home in Tarkio; children, Randy Poppa, and his wife, Kristie, Albany, Missouri, Traci Martin, and her husband, Jerry, Westboro, Missouri and Michael Poppa, Tarkio; grandchildren, Megan, Daniel, Sarah, Emily, Jordan, Timothy, Paul, Samuel, Montana (Tanner), Trev, Tawni, Tommi Lee and Austin; brothers, Richard Smith, and his wife, Rene, Rock Port, Missouri, and Burt Smith, Bethany, Missouri; sister, Amy Smith, Kansas City, Missouri; nephews, Kerry Oswald, Jacksonville, Florida, and Kim Smith, Bethany, and niece, Amanda Curran, Omaha, Nebraska.

Walden, Merle Ray - Merle Ray Walden, the son of Claude and Mildred (Allen) Walden was born August 21, 1928, in Arkoe, Missouri. He attended the Maryville and Mound City schools, and then was employed for Quaker Oats in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Merle entered the United States Air Force on December 1, 1945, and served his country for twenty years in the United States and overseas, retiring from Forbes Air Force Base, Topeka, Kansas, on December 31, 1965. He was united in marriage to Oka Marie Powell on December 18, 1948, in St. Joseph. Merle was also employed by Ross-Frazier Supply in St. Joseph for 25 years and they resided in Savannah, Missouri for 30 years. In 2001, Merle and Oka moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where they lived until the present time. Merle passed away Monday, August 9, 2010, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care at the age of 81 years.
Merle was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Walden, and one sister, Joyce Collins. Merle is survived by his wife, Oka, and sister-in-law, June Mather, both of Tarkio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Deering, Harmon S. - Harmon S. Deering, son of Oscar and Carrie (Lester) Deering, was born August 18, 1925, in Morristown, Tennessee. He passed away August 7, 2010, at his home in Tarkio, Missouri, at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 20 days.
In 1929, Harmon moved with his family to the Tarkio Community. He attended Tarkio rural schools and Tarkio High School. At a very young age, Harmon began working for Scamman and Co. farming and feeding cattle.
On May 27, 1946, Harmon was united in marriage to Ima Jean Riley in Atchison, Kansas. They made their home in rural Tarkio. He continued working for Scamman and Co. until his retirement in 1987, at which time they moved into Tarkio. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Tarkio.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ima Jean of the home; one son, Harmon Deering, Jr., and his wife, Rose, of Ozark, Missouri; granddaughter, Leechia Raquel Deering, Sparta, Missouri; two great-grandsons, Nathan Chappius and Ryan Miller, both of Sparta; one sister, Zula Bedell, Port Orchard, Washington, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Harmon was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Ezra Deering, Roy Everett Deering and Herbert Harold Deering; and two infant sisters.

McIntosh, Josephine Elizabeth Kelly - Josephine Elizabeth (Kelly) McIntosh was born March 14, 1916, on a farm northwest of Tarkio, Missouri, the daughter of Patrick J. and Minerva Frances (Gigous) Kelly. Throughout her early years, Josephine attended Tarkio rural schools and worked as a domestic in the Tarkio Community.
On August 8, 1936, Josephine was united in marriage to Paul Erwin McIntosh in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in the Fairfax, Missouri, Community, and moved to Tarkio in the mid-1970s. For many years, she was employed by the Community Hospital in Fairfax, working as a nurse’s aide and also in the dietary department. Paul passed away December 26, 1980. Josephine continued to reside in Tarkio. She passed away August 6, 2010, at the Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.
Josephine is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by baby sister, Madeline Kelly, sister, Dorothy (Kelly) Colman and stepfather, Jack Barrett.

BeBout, Dnolda Augusta Grebe - Dnolda Augusta BeBout, the daughter of Clifford C. and Vera (King) Grebe, was born June 20, 1919 in Rock Port, Missouri. Dnolda graduated from Rock Port High School.
Dnolda was united in marriage to Lowell Kenneth BeBout and they became the parents of two sons, Gregory Allen and William Eugene. They were later divorced.
As a young lady Dnolda was employed by the Rock Port Telephone Company as an operator. She later worked as a bookkeeper for Gene Lininger Plumbing and C.L. Squires Insurance Agency. She also worked at the front desk of the Rock Port Inn. Dnolda passed away Friday, June 4, 2010 at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 90 years.
Beside her parents and one infant son Gregory Allen, Dnolda was preceded in death by two brothers Arnold and Donald Grebe. Survivors include one son Bill BeBout and his wife Kathy, Fairfax, Missouri; two grandsons, Joshua J. BeBout and his wife Lori, Independence, Missouri and James Alan Samek and his wife Abby, Columbia, Missouri; one granddaughter Heather Nikole BeBout, Fairfax; and numerous cousins.

Blankenship, Jane Elaine Kirk - Jane Elaine Blankenship, the daughter of Ray Franklin and Willie Mae (Cowan) Kirk, was born June 6, 1951, in Hamburg, Iowa. Elaine graduated from Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri, and attended three years at Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska.
On December 24, 1971, Elaine was united in marriage to Leland Leroy Blankenship, Jr., in Peru. They made their home in Rock Port, and became the parents of two children, Cory and Kary.
Elaine taught at Atchison County Headstart in Rock Port for a number of years, and worked as a convenience store clerk. She was a member of the Rock Port Baptist Church. Elaine passed away Monday, July 19, 2010, surrounded by her family and friends in Rock Port, at the age of 59 years after a courageous battle with cancer.
Elaine enjoyed reading, bowling, flowers and spending time with her family.
Besides her parents, Elaine was preceded in death by her infant son, Cory Michael; brothers, Ray, Jr. “June” Kirk and his wife, Betty, James “Popeye” Kirk, Howard “Whimpie” Kirk, and Harold “Dean” Kirk; sister, Betty Jo Kirk. Bywater, Arlene Singleton - Arlene Bywater, the daughter of Orville and Irene (Hayes) Singleton, was born July 23, 1936 in Craig, Missouri. She attended school in Craig. Her family moved to Tarkio, Missouri and Arlene graduated from Tarkio High School in 1954.
On May 16, 1954, Arlene was united in marriage to Eddie Ray Bywater in Tarkio. They made their home in Tarkio their entire married life, and became the parents of five children.
Arlene was employed by the United States Postal Service for nearly 40 years, retiring as Postmistress at the Westboro, Missouri Post Office. For a short time she worked at the popcorn plant in Hamburg, Iowa. Arlene was a tireless mother and grandmother, literally raising most of her grandchildren. Her life was devoted to caring for her family and felt blessed to have 27 grand and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed working in her yard. Arlene passed away Friday June 25, 2010 at Community Hospital-Fairfax, Missouri at the age of 73 years.
Besides her parents, Arlene was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Misty Lybarger, and son-in-law, Ron Gibbons. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Eddie, of their home in Tarkio; daughter, Deborah Gibbons, Tulsa, Oklahoma; four sons, Mike Bywater, Tarkio, Phil Bywater, Council Bluffs, Iowa, Stuart Bywater, Tarkio, and Jon Bywater and his wife Amber, Tarkio; 10 grandchildren, Angela, Jacob, Sarah, Pamela, Jeremy, Shylo, Justin, Briacin, Cameron, and RayLeigh; 17 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Delilah, Cadence, Noah, Haley, Emily, Jayden, Darika, Alexis, Ariel, Arlene, Kyle, Noah, Brandon, Jordon, Brooklyn and Nicholas; five sisters, Delores Pritchard, Rose Wilder, Jackie Anderson, Ann Feldmon, and Marion Bywater; three brothers, Richard, Jesse and Henry Singleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Campbell, Orville Leroy - Orville Leroy Campbell, the son of Earl and Doris (Barnhart) Campbell, was born November 3, 1932, in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. He attended school in Tarkio, MO. In November, 1955, Orville was united in marriage to Betty J. Slemp, and they became the parents of three children, Rose Ann, Joseph Lee and Bonny Lou. They later divorced. Orville was united in marriage to Doris Brammer-Archer on April 19, 1976, in Rock Port, MO. Doris passed away in 1995. In June, 1997, Orville married Nancy Cummings, and they later divorced.
Orville was a self-taught survivor, and was very successful. He was a “scrapper”, collecting scrap metal from everywhere-along the roads, in the ditches and many more places. For a short time he was employed by Morris Hall at his salvage business in Tarkio.
In his spare time, Orville enjoyed fishing (all the time) and hunting. He also enjoyed dancing and “flirting with the women”.
Besides his parents and wife, Doris, Orville was preceded in death by his son, Joseph and sister, Wanda. Survivors include daughters, Rose Ann Campbell of Pennsylvania, and Bonny Lou Campbell, Mitchell, Nebraska; three grandchildren, F. Jay Stuetelberg, April Sky Campbell and Misty Dawn Borkowski; four great-grandchildren, Desire`, Micah, Jayden and Jordan; sisters, Shirley, Chrissy and Beatrice; brother, Stan; cousin, Allen Slemp; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Cook, Harold "Buss" - Harold “Buss” Cook, the son of, Elza Sylvester and Lillie (Maness) Cook, was born May 15, 1928, in Watson, Missouri. Buss attended Corning, Missouri, schools. At the age of seven, Buss went to work for area farmers.
On November 13, 1954, Buss was united in marriage to Charlotte Joan Wells in the Assembly of God Parsonage in Tarkio. They lived in Fairfax, Missouri, for a short time then moved to Tarkio where they lived to the present time.
Buss was employed at the A.S.C.S. Grain Bin Site for 20 years and at the Fairfax Elevator, also for 20 years. Each Year Buss grew a big garden just to give away much of the produce. He mowed yards, scooped snow and for a short time was employed for the Baer and Sons Popcorn Co. in Tarkio. Buss passed away at his home in Tarkio, on Monday July 26, 2010, at the age of 82 years.
Besides his parents, Buss was preceded in death by one daughter, Charlotte Louise Cook; brother, Howard Cook; sisters, Betty Lininger, Dorothy Cook, and Clydie Perkins. Survivors include his wife, Joan, of the home in Tarkio; daughters, Becky Curran and her husband, Stephen, Savannah, Missouri, Ellen Slemp and her husband, Terry, Tarkio; grandchildren, Jason Campbell, Melanie Campbell, Rachelle Brown, Arius, Darius, Matthew, Marcus, Nene, T.J. Slemp, Dusty Slemp and JoAnna Driskell; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Rollie Cook, Maryville, Missouri, George Cook, Riverton, Iowa; sisters, Mary Lee, Tarkio, Irene Turner, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Shirley Driskell, Claycomo, Missouri.

Dunham, Robert D. "Doc" - Robert D. “Doc” Dunham, DVM, the son of Glenn M. and Mary L. (Beckman) Dunham, was born May 3, 1923, in Westboro, Missouri. He graduated from high school in Westboro, and attended college at Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri, from 1941 to 1943. Doc then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1946.
On June 1, 1947, Doc was united in marriage to Margaret Irene Tuttle at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They became the parents of two children, Thomas Glenn and Nancy Anne.
Doc served in the Army Air Corps Pre-flight, and was later transferred to the Army Specialized Training Program at Iowa State University. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as 1st Lt. and served at Walter Reed in Washington, D.C. He also served at Ft. Meade, Maryland, with the 2nd Army Area Medical Laboratory as a Veterinary Laboratory Officer. Doc received his Honorable Discharge on March 9, 1948, with the rank of Captain. Upon discharge, Doc and Margaret then moved to Westboro, where he practiced general veterinary medicine for 40 years (1948-1988).
Doc was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, Southwestern Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, Northwest Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, and Four-County Veterinary Association. He served nine years (2001-2010) on the Board of the Atchison County Health Center in Tarkio, Missouri, and 12 years on the Board of Directors of Community Hospital, Fairfax, Missouri. During this time, he helped implement a major rebuilding program. In 1957, Doc was elected as a Director to First National Bank, Tarkio. He remained on this Board through several bank mergers and retired from the newly named U.S. Bank Board in 2005, after 48 years of service.
Besides his parents and wife, Margaret, Doc was preceded in death by his son, Tom. Survivors include daughter, Nancy Dunham, Omaha, Nebraska; three grandchildren, Jennifer Hass (John Stubbs), Biddeford, Maine, Jeffrey Hass (Erica), Leawood, Kansas, Christina Kruse (Ryan), Lawrence, Kansas; two great-grandchildren, Nathan Stubbs and Cooper Hass.

Lauritsen, Bernice Maxine Hunter - Bernice Maxine Lauritsen, the daughter of George W. C. and Fern Marie (Oliver) Hunter, was born March 4, 1937 in Bedford, Iowa. Bernice graduated from Audubon Iowa High School.
On February 19, 1956, Bernice was united in marriage to Bernard (Bernie) Lauritsen at the Methodist Church in Audubon, Iowa. They became the parents of two daughters, Susan and Pamela. Bernice was a stay at home mom. In 1966 they moved to Rock Port where she was later employed by Casey’s convenient store and Excel beef packing plant. Bernie passed away June 17, 2007. Bernice passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital, Maryville, Missouri at the age of 73 yrs.
Bernice was a member of the United Methodist Church in Rock Port. She worked with the girl scouts and enjoyed crochet, needle work, reading and crossword puzzles, but mainly spending time with her family.
Besides her father and husband, Bernice is preceded in death by an infant son, and one sister Kathy Hunter. Lindsay, William C. "Bill" - William C. “Bill” Lindsay, the son of James Robert Clifton and Mary Margaret (Hays) Lindsay was born October 12, 1949, in Hamburg, Iowa. Bill graduated from Tarkio High School in 1967, and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree and later received a Master’s in Education from Northwest Missouri State University, Maryville, Missouri.
In 1974, Bill was united in marriage to Maria Kalamon, and they became the parents of two sons, Jimmy and Danny. They later divorced.
Bill began his teaching career in the St. Joseph Public School system. He then moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where he taught for 22 years. Before his retirement in 2005, he taught in Kansas City, Missouri, for 3 years. Upon his retirement, he made his home in Camdenton, Missouri, close to his family, where he lived to the present time. Bill passed away Saturday, July 10, 2010, at Lake Regional Hospital, Osage Beach, Missouri, at the age of 60 years.
Bill participated in Boy Scouts and earned the high achievement of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed fishing and staying in the “timber” with his parents.
Survivors include his two sons, Jimmy Lindsay and his wife, Emily, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Danny Lindsay and his girlfriend, Tasha Gawatz, St. Joseph, Missouri; five grandchildren, Andon (Tuffy) Lindsay, Anna (Kerchunk) Lindsay, Levi (BamBam) Lindsay, Noah Clegg, and Hailey Gawatz; parents, Bob and Mary Lindsay, Camdenton; cousin, Billy Dean Lindsay, Tarkio; and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lingerfelt, Robert Joe - Robert Joe Lingerfelt, the son of Thomas Cecil and Esther Lucile (Chastain) Lingerfelt, was born on November 10, 1935 in Springfield, Missouri. On January 4, 1955, Bob joined the United States Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge on November 3, 1958.
In 1959, Bob was united in marriage to Priscilla Bowers in Sidney, Iowa and they became the parents of two daughters. He owned and operated his own logging business, buying standing lumber. Bob loved collecting and dealing in coins. He passed away at his home in Fairfax, Missouri on Monday, June 7, 2010 at the age of 74 years.
Bob is preceded in death by his father and sister, Geraldine (Geri) Waltz. Survivors include his daughters, Veronica Bunt and her husband, Bill and Bridget Lingerfelt, all of Mound City, Missouri; four grandchildren, Derek, Casey, Kylee, and Caden; three great grandchildren, Morgan, Colton and Jacob; mother, Esther Lingerfelt, Rock Port, and one sister, Shirley Rowley, Altoona, Iowa.

Lingerfelt, William Earl Sr - William Earl Lingerfelt, Sr., was born October 2, 1931 in Hamburg, Iowa to William Marion and Katherine Amanda (Pruitt) Lingerfelt. He graduated from Rock Port High School, Rock Port, Missouri. In 1952, Bill joined the United States Army and was a member of the 101st Airborne Division. After proudly serving his country during the Korean War, Bill received his honorable discharge in 1954.
On March 12, 1955, Bill was united in marriage to Doris Mae Case in Hamburg, Iowa and they became the parents of four children. Bill and Doris celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary this past March. Bill drove a truck for Trans America trucking firm and worked on the Meriwether Lewis steamboat river dredge. He then became employed with Consolidated Freightways trucking firm, retiring after 20 years of service.
Bill was a member of the Ralph Greer American Legion Post # 49, Rock Port and loved spending time with his family. He passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 78 years.
Besides his parents, Bill is preceded in death by sisters, Leota Albee, Gladys Curtis and infant sister, Leatrice Joy Lingerfelt and one brother, Grover Lingerfelt.

McClasky, Dorothy Sue Wallace - Dorothy Sue McClasky, 68, of St. Joseph, formerly of Tarkio, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2010, at her home in St. Joseph.
She was born on August 9, 1941, in Houston, Missouri. Dorothy grew up in Tarkio, but lived most of her life in St. Joseph. On September 16, 1956, she married Manuel McClasky, who preceded her in death on February 16, 1978. Also preceding her in death are her parents, Arthur and Sally (Morton) Wallace, a brother, Raymond Wallace.
For 20 years, Dorothy worked for the Kansas City Star. She was a Christian and had the most generous heart of anyone. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren very much, and would do anything for anyone in need.
Survivors include her son, Herbie McClasky, Kansas City, Missouri; daughter, Sue Jeffers, St. Joseph; sister, Hazel Wallace, St. Joseph; brothers, Delmar Wallace, Tarkio, Roy Wallace, Brookside, Florida, Jack Wallace, Branson, Missouri, Tom Wallace, St. Joseph, and Don Wallace, Fairfax, Missouri; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Monk, Lena Maxine Bilby - A memorial service for Lena Maxine Monk, 88, of Elmo, Missouri, was held on Friday, June 25, at 2 pm. at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio. Monk's grandson, Derrek Marteney, officiated. An inurnment will be held at a later date at Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro, Missouri.
Lena Maxine Monk, the daughter of Edmund Raymond and Lena Mae (McNaughton) Bilby, was born in Scott City, Kansas on May 6, 1922. As a child, she attended various country schools and graduated from Elmo High School in Elmo, Missouri. Maxine then received her nursing degree from Norwegian American Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.
In October of 1944, Maxine was united in marriage to Wallace Eugene Miller. They became the parents of four children, raising their family in rural Atchison County, Missouri. They were later divorced. In March of 1970, Maxine was united in marriage to Otis Monk. Otis preceded her in death, passing away in 1990.
Maxine was employed at Community Hospital – Fairfax, Missouri and as Director of Nursing at Northview Manor Nursing Home in Tarkio, Missouri. She was Director of Nursing at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port, Missouri, where she worked until retiring in 2002, four months prior to her 80th birthday. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tarkio. Maxine passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 in Manhattan, Kansas at the age of 88 years.
Besides her parents and husband Otis, Maxine is preceded in death by one brother, Raymond Bilby and one step-daughter, Peggy Monk.

Morrison, Mona Marie Case - Mona Marie (Case) Morrison, the daughter of Walter Marion and Hallie Faye (Gaines) Case, was born in Watson, Missouri on April 3, 1930. She attended Watson High School.
Marie was united in marriage to Everett Carl Morrison on September 6, 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port, Missouri. They raised their family in Watson, where they lived their entire married life. Everett passed away July 19, 1988. Marie moved to Rock Port in 1996, where she lived to the present time. She was a homemaker and lovingly cared for many, many children over the years. Marie was a member of the Watson United Methodist Church. She enjoyed attending all her children, grandchildren and great grand children’s sporting events, but her greatest pleasure came from spending time with all her family. Marie passed away Sunday, June 13, 2010 at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 80 years.
Besides her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Everett Morrison; daughter-in-law, Teresa Morrison and infant brother, Paul Dean Case.

Niedermeyer, Martha "Sue" Ferguson - Martha “Sue” Niedermeyer, the daughter of James Holland and Goldena (Allan) Ferguson, was born March 16, 1922 in Roanoke, Missouri. She graduated from Moberly, Missouri High School and continued her education at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri.
On September 11, 1942, Sue was united in marriage to Edward Louis Niedermeyer. While Ed was in medical school, they made their home in St. Louis, Missouri, where she worked as a secretary. In October of 1949, they moved to Tarkio, Missouri, where Sue lived to the present time. Ed preceded her in death, passing away January 7, 1992.
Sue was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Auxiliary in Tarkio,
the Tarkio Presbyterian Church and also member of the Tarkio Chapter FF of the PEO Sisterhood. Sue passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at the Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care Center at the age of 88 years.
Sue is preceded in death by her parents and husband Dr. Edward Louis Niedermeyer; one brother and one sister. Survivors include her three sons, Richard Lee Niedermeyer and his wife Jeanne, Noblesville, Indiana, Thomas Edward Niedermeyer, Urbandale, Iowa and Paul Holland Niedermeyer and his wife Barbara, Clinton, Iowa; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Schierkolk, Donald Eugene - Donald Eugene Schierkolk was born January 12, 1930, near Langdon, Missouri, to Yuma (Harger) and Chester Schierkolk. He passed away July 25, 2010. He attended schools in Langdon and Rock Port, Missouri. After graduating from high school, Donald enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country as a Tank Operator. On October 3, 1953, he was honorably discharged from the service and returned to Rock Port. In 1961, he was united in marriage to Jean Elder, and they continued to make their home in Rock Port. They were blessed with three children, Duane Alan, Darren Eugene and Marjorie Ann Schierkolk. Don enjoyed working hard, and was never too busy to help others on the farm or with projects. He worked at MBPXL for numerous years. He also enjoyed camping with his family.
When Jean passed away in 1990, Don moved to Pleasant View Nursing Home in Rock Port due to his health. He enjoyed gardening, tending to the flowers and sharing his garden produce with others. Don felt extremely blessed with his three grandchildren, Wyat (who died in infancy), Caleb and Ciara. He truly enjoyed the visits from his grandchildren, and loved talking to others about them. He felt they were his pride and joy!
He was preceded in death by his wife, his grandson, Wyat, his parents, and his brother, Larry Schierkolk. He is survived by son, Duane Schierkolk, and wife, Kimberly, of Shenandoah, Iowa, grandson, Caleb Schierkolk, and granddaughter, Ciara Schierkolk, of Shenandoah; son, Darren Schierkolk, and wife, Susan, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; daughter, Marjorie Schierkolk, of Shenandoah; sister, Oleta Chew, of Denver, Colorado; brother Frank Schierkolk, and his wife, Alice, of Denver, brother, Chet Schierkolk, and his wife, Sally, of Sun City Center, Florida; nieces and nephews; and his host of family of friends at Pleasant View.

Stanford, Connie Louise - Connie Louise Stanford, the daughter of Gerald and La Vern (McQueen) Stanford, was born April 17, 1950, in Hamburg, Iowa. Connie graduated from Craig Missouri High School.
Connie worked in food service her entire adult life. She was employed by Wyatt’s Cafeteria in St. Joseph, Missouri for over 17 years. She was later employed at Wal-Mart until ill health forced her retirement. She was a former member of the Craig Christian Church. Connie passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Tarkio, Missouri, at the age of 60 years.
Besides her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Bradley, brother-in-law, Larry Bradley, brother, Billy Stanford, uncle, Tom Stanford and nephew, Leslie Bradley. Wells, Doris Walker - Doris Walker Wells was born July 19, 1915, in Fairfax, Missouri, and she passed away on May 15, 2010, in Wichita, KS. A graveside service will be held in Fairfax, MO at a later time.
Doris was delivered by her grandfather Dr. J.A. Hunter, and was the second daughter born to Weaver and Zeta Walker. She and her sister, Loraine, were involved in the family farming operation at an early age. Doris gleefully would tell the story of delivering milk to local residents. Her father would milk the cows and bring the milk to town. She and Loraine would then take over. Doris drove the milk truck at age six, and her sister would take the milk to the customer’s back door.
Doris graduated from high school in Fairfax, MO, and then continued her education at Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO. She enjoyed a very active social life as a young woman. Her diary entries for this time indicate that she never stayed home, always had a date, loved to dance and play bridge, and thought all the movies that she saw were ‘keen”.
She always loved to travel, and went by herself on a cruise to Hawaii when she was in her early twenties. Doris and her daughter, Karen, made many road trips to California in her Buick convertible. They also enjoyed numerous train trips all over the United States.
Doris and John Kenneth McClain were married in Alameda, CA in 1938. They lived in Tarkio, MO, where Johnny owned a Buick car dealership. They had one daughter, Karen. John McClain died at an early age in 1946.
She married again in 1956. She and John E. Wells built a home in Fairfax, MO in 1957. John joined the family farming operation after their marriage, and continued with this work until his death in 2002.
Doris was the administrator of the Fairfax Community Hospital for 36 years. She was the secretary to the administrator for one year when the hospital opened, and then took over the leadership position. The hospital grew and prospered under her guidance.
After her retirement, she became very active in the Fairfax Presbyterian Church where she served in many different capacities.
Doris and John took special delight in their grandchildren: Chris, Cory, and Matthew Combs. They spent a great deal of time together telling stories, playing cards, and having “eat-downs”. They took great pleasure in the boys’ accomplishments, and were supportive and loving grandparents.
Doris moved to Wichita, KS, in 2007 in order to be closer to her daughter, Karen, and her son-in-law, J.C. Combs. They all enjoyed daily visits up to the time of Doris’ passing.
Doris is survived by her daughter, Karen, and her son-in-law, J.C. Combs; her grandson Cory Combs, his wife Kayo Miki and their son, Henry, of Mill Valley, CA; her grandson Matthew Combs, his wife, Rachel, and their daughter Madeline, of Nashville, TN; her niece, Ann Hogue of Greenbrea, CA; her nephew, Robert Henderson of Pasadena, CA; and her great-nephew, Andrew Hogue of San Rafael, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Loraine, her first husband, John Kenneth McClain, her second husband, John Edward Wells, her first-born grandson Jason Christopher Combs, and by her adored “grand-dog” Snoopy.
Doris was a gracious, kind, and accomplished woman. She touched the lives of many, and was grateful for the blessings that she received during her long life. She will remain in the hearts and minds of her family and of her many friends.

| Hayes, Frances Louise Newton - Mrs. Frances Louise Newton Hayes 83, of Maryville, MO passed away on August 18, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Maryville.
Frances was born on June 5, 1927 in Abilene, Texas. She graduated from the Abilene High School. She had worked in the Accounting Department for Bank of America in Kansas City, MO. for many years, retiring in 1987. She and her family moved to tarkio, MO. in 1996.
She married Jackie Cecil Hayes on May 18, 1946 in Abilene, he preceded her in death in 1999.
Frances is survived by her son, Steven R. Hayes, Tulsa, OK, and by five grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hayes has been cremated. Memorial graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, August 21, 2010, at the Home Cemetery in tarkio, MO. No formal visitation is planned.

Adams, Bethel Lorraine Smalley - Bethel Lorraine (Smalley) Adams, the daughter of Ralph W. and Leona (Weir) Smalley, was born in Ringgold County, Iowa on June 10, 1922. She passed away August 23, 2010 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, Missouri at the age of 88 years.
Bethel graduated from Conway High School in 1940. She then attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, Iowa. On April 6, 1944, she was united in marriage to Marvin Boyer and they moved to California. They later divorced. Bethel then met the love of her life, Murel (Whitie) Jackson. They ran a commercial fishing business on the Pacific Ocean until he passed away in 1961. In 1979, Bethel was married to Leroy (Sam) Adams in Ontario, California. In 1983, Sam passed away. She was employed with Rockwell International Corporation in El Segundo, California until she retired in April of 1984. Bethel then moved to southern Missouri and purchased a farm; raising cattle until 2000. She then moved to the Rock Port area, so she would be closer to her niece, Karon (Sarah) and her husband, Donald Daugherty. She loved animals and spent a lot of her time with her dogs and cats.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Murel and Sam, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Herbert Whitney, brother and sister-in-law, Nelson and Hazel Smalley, brother and sister-in-law, Ralph, Jr. and Myrtle Smalley, brother and sister-in-law, Laurel and Ruth Smalley, and a brother-in-law, Robert Jackson, two nephews, David Tjossem and John Smalley.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Jean T. and Arlene Smalley, Medford, Oregon; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and David Woods, Ouray, Colorado; and a sister, Patricia Jackson of Central Point, Oregon; other nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
There will be a family gathering at a later date to celebrate Bethel’s life.

Chastain, Hattie Mae Patton - Hattie Mae Chastain, the daughter of Jesse Ford and Rachel Katherine (Maness) Patton, was born, February 16, 1927 in Watson, Missouri. She attended Red Star country school and Watson Schools.
On June 19, 1942, Hattie was united in marriage to Allen Stewart Chastain in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in the Rock Port area and raised their four children, Raymond, Loraine, Kathy and Rosie.
Hattie was employed by the Pleasant View Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide for several years. She and Allen also operated the Coffee Cup and Sale Barn restaurants. Hattie was the “best mother in the world”, who loved her family and would do anything for them. Hattie passed away Monday, August 23, 2010, at Pleasant View Nursing Home at the age of 83 years.
Besides her parents, Hattie was preceded in death by her husband and one infant sister, Bessie Patton. Survivors include, two sons, Raymond Chastain, and his wife, Shannon, Rock Port, and Loraine Chastain and his wife, Cheryl, Fairfax, Missouri; two daughters, Kathy Tetrick and her husband, Cleon, and Rosie Moore, all of Rock Port; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; five sisters, Marie Daugherty, Betty Kirk, Elsie Foster, Tressie Hart and her husband, Ronnie, Rosalea McConell and her husband, Dennis; one brother, Arley Patton, and his wife, June; numerous nieces and nephews.

Graham, Richard D. - Richard D. Graham, son of Cleo and Pearl May (Hamilton) Graham, was born on December 13, 1940, in Westboro, Missouri. As a young boy, he attended the Homer Country School in rural Tarkio and then Tarkio, Missouri, Public Schools. On June 24, 1966, Richard was united in marriage to Ruth Ann Driskell in Tarkio. They made their home in the Tarkio and Westboro communities where they raised their six children. In 2001, Richard and Ruth Ann moved to Savannah, Missouri. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and the former Church of God all of Tarkio. He passed away at his home in Village of Country Club on August 19, 2010, at the age of 69 years, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Richard was employed at Fairfax Manufacturing and then retired from Eaton Corporation, Shenandoah, Iowa in 1986. He was a lifelong musician and loved playing Country and Gospel Music. Richard played for many years in Tarkio and the surrounding areas, sharing his music with family and friends. He loved horses and started riding at an early age where he would ride herd with his dad, Cleo, on the Luckhardt Ranch. In his written memories, Richard said, “Horses were and still are a very favorite thing to me.”
Richard was known for his stories and always had a good tale to tell, writing several down a few years ago. In one story, he said, “On the farm, Mom always raised a lot of chickens for eggs and meat. One time, Junior and I were shooting them with BB guns to watch them run around in circles. This was until Mom caught us, and then it wasn’t so funny!” In another story, he said, “Junior and I would sometimes get with the Hamilton boys and wind up in an old muddy pond or play cowboys and Indians which was always fun. We made homemade stilts or stick horses. Junior and I were coming home from one visit, riding double on a bike. He was peddling and I was riding on the front of him. I was carrying a stick about 3 feet long, dragging it along in the dirt. We were coming down a long hill going about as fast as a bike could, and I somehow got that stick in the front spoke. We first went air born awhile then tumbled and rolled. Junior pushed that old bike about another ¾ of a mile home with all the spokes about half gone and the frame all sprung. He didn’t even remember anything until we were almost home. We didn’t break any bones, which was a wonder, but we were sure peeled up and sore!”
Besides his parents, Richard was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Leigha Dix, and his special pet, Opie. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ruth Ann, of the home; four sons, Rick Graham of Rock Port, Missouri, Jeff Graham of St. Joseph, Missouri, Wes Graham and his wife, Sharon, of Auburn, NE, John Graham and his wife, Jeannie, of Amazonia, Missouri; two daughters, Leasia Dix and her husband, Rodney, of Petersburg, Virginia, Rhonda Hall and her husband, LeRoy, of Village of Country Club; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Graham, Shenandoah, Iowa, Cleo, Jr., Graham, Tarkio, Jerry Graham, Wymore, Nebraska; three sisters, Pat Riley and her husband, Bill, Tarkio, Beverley Walker and her husband, Larry, Fairfax, Missouri and Mary Jo Vance of Tarkio.

Matheny, Wendell W. - Wendell W. Matheny, 85, Blair, formerly of Westboro, Missouri, passed away Saturday, July 24 at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska.
Survivors: sons, Phillip (Julie) Matheny and Jeff Matheny, daughter, Wende Matheny all of Omaha, 7 grandchildren, brother Mac Matheny, sisters Maralee Prather and Dorothy (Carrol) Green, Westboro, Missouri.

Wallace, Delmar L. - Delmar L. Wallace, the son of Arthur Lee and Sallie Ann (Morton) Wallace, was born January 13, 1925, in Houston, Missouri. Delmar attended high school in Houston.
On February 18, 1945, Delmar was united in marriage to Dora Lee Marrs. For a short time they made their home in Houston and then in the Tarkio, Missouri, area and became the parents of three children, Betty, Cindy and Phil. Dora Lee passed away November 1, 1992. In 1993, Delmar was untied in marriage to Nina Balle. Nina passed away in 2002. On May 18, 2002, Delmar was united in marriage to Ethel Barnett. They made their home in Tarkio to the present time. Delmar passed away Monday, September 6, 2010, at Community Hospital-Fairfax, in Fairfax, Missouri, at the age of 85 years.
Delmar was a farmer and raised livestock. He was also employed as a mechanic for Chuck Sheppard International. He was a member of the Tarkio Baptist Church.
Besides his parents and wives, Delmar was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Kevin Michael Beck, sister, Dorothy McClasky, and brother, Raymond Wallace. Survivors include his wife, Ethel, of their home in Tarkio; two daughters, Betty Millsap and her husband Jack, Cindy Lee and her husband Gerald, all of Tarkio, one son Phil Wallace, Darby, Kansas; one step-daughter, Carolyn Casey and her husband Bill, Grapevine, Texas, one step-son, Larry Bill Taylor and his wife Barbara, Tarkio; five grandchildren, Miranda, Shellee, Chris, Melissa (Missy), Bill; two step-grandchildren, Marcus and Stacie; eleven great-grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Wallace, four brothers, Roy Wallace, Jack Wallace, Tom Wallace, and Don Wallace, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stevens, Robert Wythe - Robert Wythe Stevens, the son of Robert Lesley and Ora Ethel (Nuckolls) Stevens, was born May 2, 1916 in Blanchard, Iowa. He attended North Star country school northeast of Tarkio, Missouri. Robert worked on the Stevens family farm, and began his farming career at an early age.
On March 9, 1941, Robert was united in marriage to Roberta Ann Symmonds at the Methodist Church parsonage in Westboro, Missouri. They made their home in rural Blanchard and became the parents of four children; Walter, Gelvin, Nancy, and Phyllis. Roberta passed away on December 19, 1986.
On January 17, 1988, Robert was united in marriage to Lorena Faye Martin at the Fairfax Baptist Church in Fairfax, Missouri. They made their home in Fairfax where they resided until the present time. Robert passed away Friday, September, 10, 2010 at Bryan LGH East Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the age of 94 years.
Robert was a kind, gentle and very generous man who would help anyone in need. He loved farming and caring for his livestock, with his dog Bailey, close by his side. His family was extremely important to him and he enjoyed spending time with them. Robert had a love for baseball and followed the Kansas City Royals for many years. On occasion, he was found at the Daybreak Café in Fairfax enjoying a cup of coffee with his friends. Robert was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church.
Besides his parents and wife Roberta, Robert was preceded in death by a great granddaughter; Rachael Cook, four brothers; Glenn, Marvin, George, and John Stevens, three sisters; Edythe Roberts, Hazel Thompson and Ora Lea Johnson. Survivors include his wife, Lorena F. Stevens, of the home in Fairfax; sons, Walter Stevens and wife, Shirley, Watson, Missouri, Gelvin Stevens and wife, Marlene, Creighton, Nebraska; daughters, Nancy Martin and husband, Carl, Omaha, Nebraska, Phyllis Martin and husband, Dennis, Tarkio; step-children, Roger Martin and wife, Ann, Skidmore, Carolyn Martin, Higdon, Arkansas, Maurice Martin and wife, Gay, Tarkio; grandchildren, Sandra Lansdown, Corey Stevens, Douglas Stevens, Michelle Bethea, Mindy Hoffman, Carl “Randy” Martin, Monica Bailey, Mackenzie Dougherty, Carrie Gusmus, Scott Cook, Bryan Martin, Brent Martin, A.J. Riley, Edmond Lee - Edmond Lee Riley, the son of Howard and Gertrude (Hicks) Riley was born February 12, 1934 in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended the Tarkio schools.
On November 2, 1952, Edmond enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country overseas on the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Forrestal aircraft carriers during the Korean War. He received his honorable discharge on November 13, 1956.
On September 13, 1958, Edmond was united in marriage to Peggy Lucille Harger at the Methodist Parsonage in Tarkio. They became the parents of three children, Kenneth, Kema and Edmond, Jr. They were later divorced.
Edmond was a carpenter and farmed in the Tarkio area. For ten years prior to retiring, Edmond was employed by the Atchison County Highway Department. He was a member of the Allen-Schiffern American Legion Post #199 of Tarkio. Edmond passed away Saturday, September 11, 2010 at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care at the age of 76 years.
Besides his parents, Edmond was preceded in death by three sisters; Nadine Hunkins, Inace Freeman and Helen Henson, two brothers, Willis Riley and Charles “Bucky” Riley. Survivors include his two sons, Kenneth Riley and wife, Helen, Edmond L. Riley, Jr., and friend Jackie Maher, and daughter, Kema Pinzino and friend, Scott Chaney, all of Tarkio, Missouri; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, brothers, Carl Riley and wife, Caroline, Tarkio, and Jimmie Riley and wife Lorraine, Republic, Missouri; sister, Ann Phroper, Little Rock, Arkansas; numerous nieces and nephews.

Jessen, David Andrew - David Andrew Jessen, 56, of Farragut, Iowa, passed away on Monday, September 13, 2010, at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Shenandoah, Iowa
David Andrew Jessen, the son of Marvin and the late Helen Jessen and was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on August 16, 1954. He grew up in Des Moines and graduated from North High School with the class of 1972. David attended Grand View College and received an associate of arts degree. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in music.
He then moved to Hamburg, Iowa, where he taught for a number of years at the elementary school. These were his happiest years. In his later years David was employed by Casey’s until he was overcome with health problems. David died on September 13, 2010, following an extended illness. The body was cremated following the removal of donor tissue!
David loved music. He was the choir director at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Westboro, Missouri, for more than 30 years. Despite his illness, he was able to serve the church until the time of his death, and he had selected a Christmas cantata for the current season. He developed a very close and loving relationship with the congregation at St. John’s, whose members now mourn his passing.
Survivors include his father; his sister, Carol, and her husband, Ronald Kellogg; nieces Alicia and Kristin Kellogg; his uncle, Carl Nielsen, and aunt, Ingeline; his aunt, Josephine Jessen; and cousins.
