Van Hoozer, Gary Max - Gary Max Van Hoozer, the son of Max Newton and Vera June (Kidwell) Van Hoozer, was born January 6, 1945 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Gary graduated Tarkio high school in 1963, and from the University of Missouri, Columbia in 1967 with a degree in Agricultural Economics. He held the office of President of the Ag Econ Club at UMC and was the president of his graduating senior class. He then received his Masters in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1970. In 1972, Gary was employed with Jefferson Banking in Goshen, Indiana. He served as treasurer of the Goshen J.C.'s when they won first in the state wide competition of Indiana. From 1975 to 1977, Gary returned to Purdue and was employed as a grain marketing analyst. In 1977, Gary became Editor for Big Farmer Magazine and National Farm Magazine, Chicago IL. Gary returned to Tarkio and from 1983 to the present, he was a free lance farm writer, writing for the News Press as an Agricultural Business Writer and Reporter. At one point Gary published his own farm magazine called the Golden Years Country and the Farm Antique News. He also wrote free lance articles for numerous other farm magazines.

Gary was a member of the United Methodist Church, Tarkio, the Alpha Gamma Sigma Agricultural Fraternity, and the Alpha Zeta Honor Fraternity. He was a member of the American Agricultural Editors Association, in which he received national recognition. Gary passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at Pleasant View Nursing Home, Rock Port, Missouri at the age of 62 years.

Survivors include two sisters, Nancy Gillespie and husband Rod, Linn, Missouri and Carol Shinpoch and husband Russell, Branson, Missouri; three nieces, Tonya McCrea, Tara Wells and Joanne Skaggs; two nephews, Joel and Jonathan Shinpoch and one aunt, Merle Pyle, Bethany, Missouri.

Gary was preceeded in death by his parents.

Burial was in Home Cemetery, Tarkio, Missouri. Services by Davis Funeral Home, Tarkio, Missouri.
 
VanWagener, Daniel Victor - Daniel Victor “Grandpa” VanWagener, the son of Harry and Ruth VanWagener, was born March 12, 1917 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He attended school in New Jersey. Daniel began working at an early age and was employed by Helms Products of Helmetta, New Jersey.

On July 31, 1944, Daniel was united in marriage to Agnes Marie Burns. He and Agnes made their home in Helmetta until his retirement in 1986, when they then moved to Rock Port. Agnes passed away in 1992. In 2000, Daniel moved to Beulaville, North Carolina to be closer to his daughter, Edna. He passed away Saturday, December 13, 2008 at his home in Beulaville at the age of 91 years.

Besides his parents and wife Agnes, Daniel is preceded in death by his daughter Joan Meadows, who passed away in 1988; sister, Ruth Connors. Daniel is survived by his daughter, Edna May Fewell and her husband, Frank, Beulaville; eight grandchildren, Tammy, Daniel, Warren, Michael, Michele, Joan Marie, Randy and Tiffany; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; several nieces and nephews.

Van Leuven, Robert Ray - Robert Ray Van Leuven, the son of Donald Robert and Gussie Lee (Horton) Van Leuven, was born September 21, 1926 in Tarkio, Missouri. He attended country school east of Tarkio and graduated from Tarkio High School in 1944.

Bob entered the United States Navy on August 22, 1944 and served his country during World War II. On January 28, 1945, Bob married Donna Hunter and they became the parents of Pam and Cindy. They were later divorced. Upon receiving his honorable discharge on April 17, 1946, Bob returned to Fairfax, Missouri and farmed with his father-in-law, J.E. Hunter.

On June 11, 1959, Bob was united in marriage Lavern Valasek and became the parents of Valerie, Bob and Randolph. They lived in Omaha, Nebraska where Bob was employed as a truck driver hauling livestock and later worked for Cargill hauling agricultural products. He retired in 1993 after 35 years receiving the “One Million Accident Free Miles Award”. In Omaha Bob was a member of the American Legion. Lavern preceded him in death in 1991.

On April 22, 1999, Bob married Betty McIntosh in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in Tarkio until the present time. Bob loved agriculture and was proud of his family’s Century Farm where he raised cattle and sheep until 2006. Bob passed away Friday, April 23, 2010 at Tarkio Rehabilitation and Health Care at the age of 83 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lavern; brother, Dale Van Leuven; granddaughter, Lisa K. Simmons and niece, Stacy Van Leuven. Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean, of their home in Tarkio; children, Pam Rightsell and husband, Mac, Tarkio, Cindy Wykes and husband, Steve, Dunkirk, Ohio, Valerie Rauso and husband, Lou, Omaha, Nebraska, Bob Van Leuven and wife, Donna, Mesa, Arizona and Randolph Van Leuven, also of Tarkio; stepchildren, Sharley Ann Squier and husband, Fred, Kalvin McIntosh and wife, Stephanie, Paul McIntosh and wife, Shannon, Kelly McIntosh and wife, Cindy, Sid McIntosh and wife, Ashley; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, eleven step grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Lois Van Leuven, one niece, one nephew and numerous cousins.

Vest, Richard Lee - Richard Lee Vest, 88, passed away in San Antonio on Saturday, February 6, 2010. He was the first-born child of Earl and Ruth Vest, beginning his life on November 26, 1921, in Rock Port, MO. The family then moved to Farragut, Iowa where his two brothers and sister were born. They spent their childhood on the family farm. Richard graduated from high school in 1938 and moved on to college at N. W. Missouri Teaching College in Maryville, MO. Dick joined the U. S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and was first stationed in the Philippines. He survived the Bataan Death March and POW camps in the Philippines and Japan. Shortly after returning home he married Marjorie Louise Amfahr and they had three children: Cheryl, Carol and Michael. Dick remained in the US Air Force and then Civil Service for the remainder of his 35 year career enjoying posts around the US as well as England and Morocco. Dick always had a love for farming, gardening, bowling, reading and social and political commentary. A favorite pastime was drinking coffee and solving current local and world issues with a group of his friends affectionately known as the “brain trust”. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Earl and Ruth Elizabeth Vest and his two brothers Billy Dale and Bob Lyle Vest. He is survived by his two daughters, Cheryl Garrison and Carol Matteson; a son, Michael Vest and his wife Cynthia; four grandchildren, Calvin Sanders, Alexis Garrison, Jarrett Garrison, and Tyler Vest and his wife Heather; one great-granddaughter, Kylie Grace Vest; a sister, Phyllis Wallace, two sisters-in-law, Joan Vest and Dorothy June Vest; and, of course, his best friend and companion, Mary Chavez.
