Campbell, Romie - Funeral services for Romie Campbell, 78, of Springfield, Mo, a former Westboro, Mo, resident and farmer will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm at the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church in Shenandoah. The Rev Billy Burris will officiate.

Burial will be in the Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Mo. Memorials are suggested to the Full Gospel Church in Shenandoah or the Praise Assembly of God Church in Springfield, Mo.

Romie Campbell was born Aug 13, 1910, in Crossville, Tenn, the son of J. Victor and Louisa (Thomas) Campbell. He moved to the Westboro, Mo, area with his family at a young age where he attended country schools.

He was united in marriage to Opal Smith at the home of her parents in Tarkio, Mo, on Dec 25, 1931. After their marriage, the couple made their home in the Westboro area, where Romie was a farmer.

He also enjoyed fishing, yard work and gardening.

In 1972, he retired from farming and the couple moved to Florida. In 1985 they returned to Missouri, moving to Springfield.

On March 21, 1988, Opal was killed in an automobile accident near Springfield.

Due to failing health, Romie was hospitalized in Des Moines and two weeks ago was moved to the Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, where he passed away Saturday morning, Aug 20.

He was a former member of the Full Gospel Assembly of God Church in Shenandoah, the Cypress Cathedral Assembly of God Church in Florida and the Praise Assembly of God Church in Springfield.

Survivors include a foster son Marvin Sparks and his wife Esther of Coon Rapids, Iowa; and two foster granddaughters, Sherrie and Shellene Sparks, both of Coon Rapids.

Also surviving are a sister Velity Lawrence of Red Oak; three brothers, Earl of Tarkio, Mo, Eldie of Red Oak and Dale of Northboro; and several nieces, nephews and a host of other friends and relatives. [1988]

Carlisle, Shirley Louella Clark, was born Aug 1, 1936 in Tarkio, Mo, the daughter of Ray and Mabel Sloan Clark. During her early years, she attended rural school near Tarkio and later graduated from Tarkio High School in 1954.

In August of 1954, she was united in marriage to Howard A. "Shay" Carlisle Jr at the United Methodist church in Tarkio. The couple lived all their married life in the Tarkio community.

Besides rearing their own family, Shirley babysat for many children in the Tarkio area. In August of 1976 she began working at Eaton Corporation Transmission Division in Shenandoah.

Through the years, she collected many cookbooks. In her spare time, she decorated cakes and collected Depression glass sugar and creamer sets. She was always doing things for her family and enjoyed her children and grandchildren.

Shirley was a member of the Tarkio United Methodist church.

She died Aug 17, 1988 at the Fairfax, Mo Community Hospital. She was 52 years of age.

Survivors include her husband Shay of the home; three daughters, Mrs Joe (Gale) McDonald of Lee's Summit, Mo, Mrs James (Brenda) Havel of Wilber, Neb., and Mrs Brad (Angie) Hutchison of Coin; one son David Shayne Carlisle of Lathrop, Mo; and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are her mother Mrs Mabel Clark of Tarkio; four brothers, Phil and Kent Clark, both of Tarkio, Bill Clark of Belton, Mo, and Kim Clark of St Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her father, a daughter Susanne and a sisters Margaret.

Funeral services were Saturday afternoon, Aug 20 at the Tarkio United Methodist Church. The Rev Cleo Colville officiated.

Interment was at the Tarkio Home Cemetery in Tarkio.

Special music was provided by organist Norma Mattson and Janett Adams.

Casketbearers were John Hardy, Joe McDonald, Dewayne Clark, Stewart Clark, William R. Clark and Brad Hutchison. [1988]

Carder, Eliza Brown, was the daughter of Hiram and Betty Brown. She was born in Atchison county, Mo, Jun 27, 1859. She was united in marriage to John Brown in September, 1881. To this union were born four children: two sons, Carl Brown of Fairfax, Mo and T.L. Brown of Mound City, Mo; two daughters: Mrs J.F. Cunningham, St Joseph, Mo and Mrs S.E. Graham, St Joseph, Mo.

Mr Brown passed away April 1, 1922. On December 11, 1924 she was married to James M. Carder, who preceded her in death on Aug 1, 1939.

In early life she professed her faith in Christ and united with the church at Linden, near Rock Port, Mo, on which she remained a faithful member until her death, at the home of her daughter, Mrs J.F. Cunningham in St Joseph, Mo, March 13, 1945 at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 16 days.

She leaves her four children, 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her passing.

With the exception of the last few months of her life spent in the homes of her daughters in St Joseph, she lived her entire life in and around Watson. She was of a family who came early to Atchison county and found it good, and so remained to make their home and rear their family, and contributed their part to the making of the country of their choice, leaving behind them the record of work well done and lives well spent.

The body of Mrs Carder was brought from St Joseph to Watson, where funeral services were conducted on March 15, 1945 in the Watson Baptist church by Dr A.W. Tandy. Burial was in High Creek cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chas. Christian, Leo and Tim Whalen, Geo Petree, S.F. Wier and Wesley Bowers.

Curfman, Greg, 42, died May 15 at his home in Carthage, Mo.

He had taught music in the Hamburg [Iowa] Schools for five years. While here he was active in the Methodist Church and had served as Sunday School Superintendent.

He was a member of the Rock Port Methodist church, taught Sunday School and had been assistant Scoutmaster for several years.

At the time of his death, he was employed in professional scouting.

He is survived by his wife, Tamara; two sons, Karl and James; and a sister, Mrs Phillip (Jane) Romig, Golden, Colo.

Funeral services were held May 18 at the Methodist Church in Rock Port, conducted by Pastor Norman Smyth. Interment was in the Green Hill Cemetery. [May 24, 1984]

Conrad, John, was born in Hessan, Dramstadt, Germany, Sept 18, 1845, and died at his home near Watson, Feb 11, 1926, aged 80 years, 4 months and 23 days. Funeral services were held at the High Creek Church, Saturday afternoon, conducted by the Rev D.W. Griffith, and burial was made in the cemetery at that place.

Cook, Delphus - Mr and Mrs Raymond Nixon drove to Tarkio Sunday afternoon to the George Lytle home. Their little grandson, Delphus Cook, was accidently shot Saturday, when he and two little playmates were going to the country, where the boy's father, Harry Cook, was working. One of the boys got hold of a gun in some way and it will never be known exactly how it happened. He was shot through the head.

Richard Cook received a message Saturday telling of the accidental shooting of his nephew in Tarkio. The boys had been out hunting when the Cook boy was shot in the head and killed. The other boy went into town to call for help. A call was put in to the farm house near the scene of the shooting and it happened to be the boy's own father who found him. Another case of small boys with firearms. The boy died on the way to the hospital. Funeral services were held in Tarkio Wednesday. [Apr 26, 1945]

Cook, Lillie, 89, mother of George Cook of Riverton, died Dec 8, at a Fairfax, Mo Hospital. Funeral rites were Dec 11, at the Davis Funeral Chapel at Tarkio, with burial there. She was also an aunt of Mrs J.C. Kirk of Riverton. Seven other children survive besides George. [Dec 28, 1989]

Bartholomew, Wiley O., a long time citizen of the High Creek neighborhood, passed away at a hospital in St Joseph [Missouri], Saturday at the age of 49 years, 9 months and 21 days. He was survived by his wife, two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at High Creek, Monday, conducted by Rev D.W. Griffith, and burial was made in the High Creek cemetery. [June 26, 1874 - Mar 22, 1924]

Bailey, John G. died on Tuesday, February 11th [1930]. Mr Bailey was said to have been the first white child born in Atchison county, Missouri. He had spent a greater portion of his life in Atchison county, Missouri, and in Locust Grove township [Fremont Co], Iowa. A few years previous to his death he came to Hamburg to make his home with his son, W.W. Bailey, and while living here he made many friends. He was 84 years, 3 months and 13 days old at the time of his death. Funeral services were conducted at the Johnson Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, the Rev D.N. Gillett officiating. Interment was made in the Waldron cemetery, near Northboro. [Feb 15, 1940 - Ten years ago column] [Oct 28, 1845 - Feb 11, 1930]

Barnhart, Hazel L., daughter of Kelly N. and Lemma (Findley) Richardson, was born August 13, 1911 in Hamburg, Iowa. She died April 3, 1990 at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port, Mo, at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 21 days.

She attended Hamburg rural schools and then graduated from high school at Percival, Ia. After attending Peru State College for two years she taught rural school near Hamburg and later operated a beauty shop also located in Hamburg.

On Feb 6, 1935 she was united in marriage to Carl (Cap) Barnhart in Rock Port. They lived and farmed in the Watson, community until moving near Rock Port following their retirement in 1972. Cap died July 5, 1973. Hazel continued living in her home until moving into Rock Port in 1986. Since 1987 she has resided at Pleasant View Rest Home.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Rock Port and the Extension Club.

She is survived by two brothers, Boyd Richardson, Hamburg [Iowa], and Max Richardson of Clarinda [Iowa]; five sisters, Mrs Neva Matthews, Hamburg, Mrs Clara Welch, Clackamus, Ore, Mrs Velma Smith and Mrs Doris Ryan both of Hamburg and Mrs Maxine Douglas of Los Angeles, Calif, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Funeral services were held Apr 6 in the United Methodist Church in Rock Port, conducted by Dr Mark Turnbough. Interment was in Linden Cemetery. [Apr 12, 1990]

Barnhart, Willis Lee "Kearney", son of John David and Mary Elizabeth (Inbody) Barnhart was born Apr 3, 1916, in rural Rock Port, Mo. He attended the Golden View Country School and graduated from Watson High School. He attended business school in St Joseph, Mo.

On Sept 21, 1940, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Jean Martin, in Maryville, Mo. They moved to Omaha [Nebraska] and worked for the Martin Bomber plant during WW II.

Kearney was a member of the Sonora Masonic Lodge #200 and the High Creek Cemetery Board. He died Feb 2, 2001 at Grape Community Hospital [Hamburg, Iowa] at the age of 84 years.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; one son, Byron of Rock Port; one daughter, Joy Barnhart, Watson; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, John Jr Barnhart, Moriarty, NM; two sisters, Ruth Barnhart and Doris Bemberger of Lamita, Ca, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Floyd, Orville "Beck," Carl "Cap," Donald, and George "Sonny."

Funeral services were held Feb 6 at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with the Rev Carroll Fischer officiating. Interment was in the High Creek Cemetery. [Feb 15, 2001]

Bemberger, Clifton H. (Sonny), was born September 14, 1915 in Watson, Mo, the son of Joseph and Amy (Hayes) Bemberger. He died Oct 29, 1992 at the Community Hospital in Fairfax at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 15 days.

All his life was spent in the Watson area where he attended the Bethany and Bellview country schools and Watson High School. Earlier he had helped his father farm and in later years farmed for himself.

On May 19, 1934, he married Aileen Garst and to this union six sons were born; Clifton and Clifford, both of Fulton, Mo; Kenneth of Rock Port; Benny of Auburn, Nebr; Brad of Carlos, Minn; and Tom of Nebraska City. Other survivors include two brothers; Joe Bemberger of Lomita, Calif; Keith Bemberger of Jefferson City, Mo and one sisters, Edith Garst of Watson; twelve grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Amy; one sisters, Mildred McDonald and one grandson, Kevin Bemberger.

Funeral services were held Nov 1, at the Minter Funeral Chapel in Rock Port with Rev Carroll Fischer officiating. Interment was in High Creek Cemetery, Watson. [Nov 12, 1992]

Bemberger, Joe, son of Frank and Nancy Bemberger, was born May 10, 1890, and departed this life March 17, 1941, at the age of 50 years, 10 months and 17 days.

He was united in marriage to Amy Hayes on October 3, 1910. To this union were born six children, one dying in infancy. Those that survive are: Mrs Mildred McDonald, Mrs Edith Garst, Clifton, Joe and Keith Bemberger. He is also survived by his wife, three brothers and three sisters, namely John and Charley Bemberger of Watson, Lewis of Oregon, Mo, Mrs Maud Bailey of Portland, Ore, Mrs Mary Harmon of Watson and Mrs Laura Bond of Syracuse, Neb. One sister, Sylvia, preceded him in death many years ago. There were four grandchildren, one whom he raised.

Funeral services were held at the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Watson, amid a beautiful floral array, with Rev P.F. Meador presiding, assisted by Rev Vincent Lambert of the Baptist church.

Mr Bemberger was an outstanding farmer and was held in high esteem by those who knew him. His many friends testified by their presence of his kindness shown to his fellow men. He was known as one that was ready to help those in need.

While not a member of any certain church, he was interested in supporting churches. He expressed his readiness to met his Maker. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful High Creek cemetery. [Apr 3, 1941]

Banks, Edith Irene (Dalbey) was born on March 18, 1895 at rural Coin, Iowa, the daughter of George W. and Samantha Jones Dalbey. She attended rural Page Co schools, Coin High School and Western Normal in Shenandoah, Iowa. She also attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, coming back to Page Co to teach three years in rural schools.

On October 14th, 1916 she married Wilbert B. Banks of rural Northboro. They farmed in Atchison Co, Mo, as well as Fremont Co and Page Co all their married life. To this union one daughter Cleo Winifred was born. Edith attended church regularly until failing health prevented her from doing so. She was a member of the William White Chapter of the DAR and was eligible to join the Mayflower Organization.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbert, in 1963; brothers Fletcher, Ralph, Russell and Richard Dalbey and sisters Minnie Crook, Mary Harris. She is survived by her daughter Cleo Harris, of Clarinda, Ia; son-in-law and brother-in-law of Kiowa, Colo, as well as several nieces and nephews. She went to be with her Lord on December 12, 1985, at the Bethesda Care Center. Services were conducted from the Walker-Merrick Funeral Home on Dec 14th, with burial at Walden Grove Cemetery, near Westboro, Mo. [Dec 23, 1985]

Fay, Myrtle - Services were held at the Tarkio United Methodist Church at 2 pm on Monday, Feb 27, 1984, for Myrtle Sarah Fay of Tarkio. Reverend Asher McDaniel officiated. He was assisted by Reverend Doctor F. Tom Dory. Interment was made in the Tarkio Home Cemetery under the direction of Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio.

Myrtle Fay, age 94, passed away in Wichita, Kan, on Friday Feb 24, 1984.

Myrtle was born near Tarkio on Feb 28, 1889, to Gemima (Hindman) and Henry P. Hurst. She lived all of her life in the Tarkio area with the exception of six years (1950-1956) when she lived in Omaha, Neb. She attended Morning Sun Country School, Peru State Normal, Maryville Normal, Denver Business College and Tarkio College.

Myrtle was married to Harry D. Fay on April 2, 1913, in Tarkio. She had worked as a Practical Nurse in Tarkio for a number of years. She had also worked in a nursing home in Omaha.

Myrtle Fay was a member of the United Methodist Church. She was an Eastern Star Past Matron. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women, a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary, and she had served on the Welfare Board of Atchison County.

Survivors include two sons, Robert H. Fay of Rock Port, Mo, and F. Curtis Fay of Memphis, Tenn; two daughters, Marjorie M. Schoonover of Dallas, Texas, and Harriet H. White of Derby, Kan; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on July 24, 1934; one grandchild, three brothers and eight sisters.

Farnsworth, Icile Pauline was born Jan 1, 1905, in Westboro, Mo, the daughter of Harry Edward and Beulah M. (Billups) Shelby. She died at Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg, Iowa, on March 6, 1986, at the age of 81.

She received her education in the Westboro and Tarkio, Mo, schools.

On Dec 27, 1926, she was united in marriage to Buland Farnsworth in Kansas City, MO. Buland, Pauline and son Dean made their home in the Westboro community and later in the Page County, Iowa, area for 10 years. In 1942 they returned to Westboro.

Retiring from the farm in 1966, Pauline and Buland moved into the town of Westboro where they were both active in community and church affairs.

She was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church and was awarded a special membership in the Women's Society of Christian Service on Feb 15, 1966. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the Westboro Book Club and active in 4-H and the Extension Club.

Buland preceded her in death on Nov 1, 1978. For the past few years she had been a resident of the Garden View Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa.

She is survived by her son L. Dean Farnsworth and daughter-in-law Naomi (Pat) Farnsworth of Shenandoah [Iowa]; two grandchildren, Mrs Russell (Detra) Braymen of Blanchard, Iowa, and Ryan Farnsworth of Shenandoah; two great grandchildren, Phillip and Kurtis Braymen of Blanchard; two sisters, Mrs William (Marie) Finical, Alexandria, La, and Mrs Ralph (Corriene) Curtis of LaHabra, Calif; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and husband Buland, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Nellie, Annabel and Maxine, and one brother Harold.

Services were held March 8 from the United Methodist Church in Westboro with the Rev Kyle Hern officiating. Music was provided by organist Mrs Norma Mattson.

Fay, Phyllis Jane Curfman, daughter of Mildred and Ardury Curfman, grew up in Tarkio, Missouri, graduated from Tarkio High School and went on to Tarkio College and graduated with a business degree. The year previous to her graduation, she was married to Robert H. Fay (1938). In college she was voted most popular girl on the college campus. She was an active member of Lambda Sigma Tau, Sigma Delta, YWCA and Women's Athletic Association.

Her married life began in Chicago, Illinois, where she and Robert lived for a short time. When they moved back to Tarkio their first daughter Carol was born.

During the war years, Phyllis and Bob moved to Shenandoah, Iowa. Just before her husband went off to the Pacific Theater, a second daughter Kathy was added to their family.

In 1948, Phyllis and her family moved to Rock Port where her husband became a hardware merchant and Phyllis happily settled into full-time motherhood and part-time bookkeeper for the hardward store. In 1950, a third daughter Sally was born. They spent the next 25 years of their lives immersed in the hardware store and raising a family.

Phyllis taught in the Rock Port school system as a business teacher, worked at the Atchison County Co-OP, all the while participating in P.E.O. Chapter DU, Cosmopolitan Club, Bridge Club, Sorosis, Fire and Legion Auxiliaries, and church activities. Phyllis passed away at St Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City, Nebraska, February 7, 2002, at the age of 84 years.

She is survived by her 3 daughters: Carol Caris of High Park, Il (husband Barry), Kathy Boatman of Hamburg, Ia (husband Dan), Sally Steinheider of Overland Park, Ks (husband Jim); 8 grandchildren: Curt, Andy and Peter Caris, David and Clay Boatman (wife Richelle), Eric, Brett and Jill Steinheider; 2 great grandchildren; Carson and Conner Boatman; and her sisters, Mary Carolyn Baughman. Other loved ones in her extended family include Harriet White (sister-in-law), Curt and Jean Fay (brother- and sister-in-law), Dale Schoonover (brother-in-law) and nieces and nephews.

Her parents, Mildred and Ardury Curfman, her husband Robert, brother John (and wife Peggy) and brother-in-law Bob Baughman preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Rock Port Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice in her memory.

Funeral services were Monday, February 11, 2002 at 10 am at the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port, Missouri and were conducted by Pastor Bill "J" Terry, Jr.

Interment at the Home Cemetery, Rock Port, Missouri.

Frierhofer, Rosa - Mrs Anna Whelan, her daughter, Miss Bernice, and son Timothy, all drove to Rock Port on Saturday afternoon to attend the funeral of their cousin, Mrs Rose Frierhofer. The deceased was a sister to Chas Fischer, whose funeral was the preceding Saturday. They died of pneumonia. [Feb 18, 1937]

Fischer, Martin, 70, a life-long resident of this community, passed away at his home near Watson [Missouri] on Monday. He was born at Watson on January 26, 1876. He leaves a wife and the following children, Hubert, Joe, Ruth, Flora and Marie. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev Loren Goings of Rock Port, and interment was in the High Creek cemetery.

Mr Fischer was well and favorably known in this community, and was a man held in highest respect by all. [Feb 18, 1937]

Flesner, Gerald - Funeral services were held at 11 am Thursday, March 5, 1992, at Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio for Gerald Wilbert Flesner of Camdenton, Missouri. Reverend Rob Winger officiated. Private graveside services were scheduled to be held at Center Grove Cemetery in Westboro, Missouri, at a later date.

Gerald Flesner, age 59, passed away at his home in Camdenton on Monday, March 2, 1992,. He was born July 6, 1932, in Walnut Grove, Minnesota, to Marie (McCollister) and Wilbert L. Flesner. His early years were spent in the Tarkio area where he graduated from Tarkio High School in 1951. He entered the United States Navy on November 5, 1952, and served his country overseas, receiving his honorable discharge on August 23, 1954.

On March 30, 1959, Gerald was united in marriage to Margy Lenore Rolf in Denver, Colorado. From 1956 to 1984 Gerald was employed with Western Union working throughout Illinois, Missouri, and Colorado. Before his retirement in 1984, he became Senior Operations' Engineer. He then worked for the Codex Corporation selling computer systems to federal and state government agencies.

Gerald was a member of the United Methodist Church of Tarkio and the Paul Revere Lodge Number 162 A.F. & A.M. of Denver, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Howell.

Survivors include: Gerald's wife, Margy, of the home in Camdenton; his father, Wilbert Flesner, of Grand Lake, Colorado; one son, Gerald Flesner, Jr., of Hurst, Texas; two daughter, Kelly Dawn Elbert, Peculiar, Missouri, and Linda Jo Bradell of Kansas City, Missouri; three grandchildren, Jed Robert Bradell II, Traci Lee Bradell and Tiara Elbert; one sister, Geraldean Moore, of Grand Lake, Colorado; and step-father, Jess Howell, of Tarkio. Memorials may be directed to the Atchison County Nutrition Center in Tarkio. [Mar 12, 1992]

Frazier, Fred W., son of Willard and Elsie (Kellison) Frazier, was born June 21, 1907, in Hamburg, Iowa. He died Feb 25, 1994, at his home in Westboro, Mo at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 4 days.

He received his education in the Hamburg schools graduating from Hamburg High School in 1927.

On August 24, 1942, Fred joined the United States Army Air Force and was a member of the 325th Fighter Group known as "The World Famous Checkertail Clan". They were activated in Hillsgrove, Rhode Island, on July 30, 1942, and were in combat from April, 1943, to May, 1945, flying from bases in North Africa and Italy. He received his honorable discharge on Sept 28, 1945.

During the early 1950's he began work for the Burlington Northern Railroad retiring in 1970. On February 6, 1971, he was united in marriage to Naomi L. Mackey in Hamburg [Iowa]. They resided in Westboro, Mo. Naomi died Nov 1, 1987.

Fred was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church, the Westboro American Legion Post Number 32, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs Robert (Dorothy) Giboney, Garland, Tex and Mrs Ralph (Jean) Lytle, Nebraska City, Nebr; one sister, Alpha Mears, Anderson, Calif; and two grandchildren.

Besides his parents and wife, Naomi, Fred was preceded in death by one sister, Maxine Miller.

Gaines, I.B., was born July 14, 1899 in Watson, Mo, the son of William Jessie and Sarah E. (Millsap) Gaines. He died at his home in Rock Port, on Nov 16, at the age of 84 years.

His early schooling was received in the Watson schools after which he attended the Highland Park College in Iowa and then graduated from Drake University College of Pharmacy in Des Moines. Following his graduation he worked as a pharmacist in Peru, Nebr.

On May 22, 1928, he was united in marriage to Mildred Evangeline Burke. They made their home in the Watson area where he was employed by Dr Gray and they owned and operated their own drug store. Later they moved to Westboro and owned and operated a drug store there also. Six years later they returned to the Watson area and again operated their own business. For the last 23 years they have made their home in the Watson and Rock Port communities and he worked for the Gildersleeve and Town and Country Drug stores until his retirement. In 1978 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the Watson United Methodist Church; one of the founders of the Watson Lions Club and for many years sponsored several ball teams throughout the area.

He is survived by his wife Vange of the home; 2 daughters: Mrs Bobbie (Betty) Haun of Hamburg, and Mrs Paul (Sandy) Farnsworth of Adair, Ia; 1 son Stephen B. Gains of Watson; 1 sister Mrs Hallie Case of Watson; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 1 infant daughter Mae Jane; 3 sisters: Amanda, Oma and Sylvia and 3 brothers: Joe, Willard and Everett.

Funeral services were held Nov 19, at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port.

The Rev Ann Morehouse and the Rev Barry Boulware officiated. Interment was in High Creek cemetery. [Dec 15, 1983]

Services were held at 10;:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 1983, at the Watson United Methodist Church in Watson, Mo., for LB. Gaines of Rock Port, Mo. Interment was made in the High Creek Cemetery near Watson under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel of Rock Port.
LB. Gaines, age 84, passed away in his home in Rock Port Wednesday evening, Nov. 16, 1983. He was a retired pharmacist from the Rock Port and Watson areas.
Survivors include his wife, Vange, of the home; two daughters, Betty Haun, Hamburg, Iowa, and Sandy Farnsworth, Adair, Iowa; one son, Stephen B. Gaines, Watson; one sister, Hallie Case, Watson; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials have been directed to the Rock Port and Hamburg, Iowa, Rescue Units.

THE TARKIO AVALANCHE, Tarkio, Missouri, Nov 24, 1983

Frazier, Naomi L., daughter of James and Melissa (Beason) Mackey, was born June 20, 1907 in Atchison County, Missouri. She died Nov 1, 1987, at the Pleasant View Rest Home in Rock Port, Mo, at the age of 80 years.

During her early years she attended High Creek Country School and later Hamburg High School.

She was united in marriage to Fred Frazier Feb 6, 1971, in Hamburg [Iowa]. They made their home in Westboro.

She was a member of the Westboro United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Fred, of Westboro; 2 step-daughters, Mrs Jean Lytle of Hamburg and Mrs Dorothy Giboney of Garland, Texas; 1 sister, Mrs Pearl Barnes, of Oroville, Calif; and 23 nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 5 brothers.

Funerals services were held Nov 3 at the Davis Funeral Home in Tarkio with the Rev Kyle Kern officiating. Interment was in the Center Grove Cemetery, Westboro. [Nov 12, 1987]

Houchin, Edward Eugene, was born to Thomas and Alice Houchin at Hamburg [Iowa], Dec 17, 1924. He died Feb 2 at a hospital in Madison County, Winterset, Ia. He grew up in the Watson, Mo area. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. On Dec 17, 1949 he was married to Ethelmae Landers. Three children were born to them. He had lived in the Riverton [Iowa] area most of his later life. He had retired after working the for A.S.C.S. For twenty years. He is survived by his wife, Ethelmae; sons Bill of Riverton and Eugene of Farragut; daughter Kathy Anderson of Coin [Iowa]; three grandsons; sisters Bonnie Sears of Sidney [Iowa], Jean Sharp of Tabor [Iowa], and Mary Kerr of Clarinda [Iowa]; and brother Ervin Houchin of Randolph [Iowa] and Thomas Houchin of Columbus, Ga. His parents, two brother Arlie and Elmer and two sisters Bessie Mount and Irene Davis preceded him in death.

Funeral rites were held Feb 26 at Shull Funeral Home conducted by Pastor Ron Nelson. Music was by Pamela Koso and Debbie Rogers. Sylvia McAllister cared for the memory book; Linda Cooper and Valeri Albertsen the flowers. Honorary bearers were Leo Wynn, Gary Taylor, Clarence Parkison and Wendel Ward. Bearers were Terry and Robert Anderson, Matthew and Patrick Houchin, Rick Barton, Don Barton and Louis Smith. Burial was in Linden cemetery near Rock Port. Williams-Jobe-Gibson-Post No 128 had graveside rites. [Mar 4, 1993]

Fay, Robert Hurst, was born July 8, 1916, in Tarkio, Missouri, to Harry DeLos and Myrtle (Hurst) Fay. He grew up in Tarkio, graduated from high school in 1935 and Tarkio College in 1938. He was president of the student body in college and participated in track and football, lettering all 4 years.

On June 2, 1938, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Curfman. To this union three daughters were born: Carol (Mrs Barry) Caris, Katharine (Mrs Dan) Boatman, and Sarah (Mrs James) Steinheider.

In 1941 he went to Shenandoah, Iowa to work for the George Jay Drug Company until 1949. During the time he lived in Shenandoah, he was inducted into the United States Navy (1943) and after training, went to the Philippines. Bob achieved the rank of Lt. J.G. during Work War II and served aboard an ocean-going tug boat (ATA 122) stationed in the South Pacific towing units to the war zone until 1945, when he was discharged and returned to Shenandoah.

He had brief stints teaching high school in the Westboro and Watson, Missouri school systems and was an advocate for higher education.

Bob and his family moved to Rock Port, Missouri in 1949 where he was a prominent businessman and community leader owning and operating Rock Port Hardware. He was involved in many community organizations giving his time and energy to the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, American Legion, Rock Port Pool Board, Rock Port School Board, volunteering for the Rock Port Fire Department, and active in Boy Scouts.

Bob was the second Eagle Scout in Atchison County, later served as cub and scout master and was given the Silver Beaver award in St Joseph for his outstanding years of service to the young men in scouting.

He was dedicated to and served on the Rock Port Telephone Company Board. On the national level he served as President of the National Telephone Cooperative Association during 1986-87. Bob's most recent award was presented in 1993: the Director Life Achievement Award of the NTCA.

Bob had a variety of interests and hobbies, among them photography, gardening and woodworking. He built tables and chests for his home in Rock Port. He had a love of sports and supported all of the Rock Port Blue Jay teams. In fact, he was still timing Blue Jay relays until his late 70s.

He passed away March 5, 2000 at the Beverly Health Care Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska at the age of 83 years.

Bob is survived by his wife, Phyllis, three children, Carol, Highland Park, Illinois, Katharine, Hamburg, Iowa and Sarah, Overland Park, Kansas; brother Curtis Fay, Olive Branch, Mississippi, sister, Harriet White, Derby, Kansas, brother-in-law, Dale Schoonover, Lindale, Texas; eight grandchildren, Curt, Andy and Peter Caris, David and Clay Boatman, Eric, Brett and Hill Steinheider; two great-grandchildren, Carson and Conner Boatman.

Preceding him in death were his parents, sister, Marjorie Schoover and brother-in-law, Robert White.

Services were Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at 10:00 AM at the First Lutheran Church in Rock Port, Missouri and were conducted by Pastor Tim Carey.

Interment at Home Cemetery in Tarkio, Missouri.

Memorials may be directed to the Senior Citizens Nutrition Center of The Rock Port First Lutheran Church.

Ellison, George D., services were held July 19 at Minter Funeral Home at Rock Port, Mo. The Rev Carroll Fischer officiated and Mrs Dean Hull furnished music.

Interment was in High Creek cemetery. Casketbearers were Jack Martin, Robert Fischer, Donald Stanton, Stephen Gaines, Gary Armstrong, Robert Lee Stanton.

His death came Friday at Fairfax hospital.

He was native of Watson, Mo, born May 20, 1901 to William M. and Laura A. (Hudson) Ellison.

His early years were spent on a farm in the Watson community, farming with his parents, prior to his marriage on July 28, 1929 to Elsie Turner in Lincoln, Neb. Their entire married life was in the Watson community.

He is survived by his wife Elsie, three daughters, Mrs Robert (Iva) Case Jr of Braddyville, Ia, Mrs Bill (Laura) Harmon of Watson, Mo, and Mrs B.L. (Beverly) Robinson of Hamburg, two sons, Bill Ellison of Braddyville and Ernie Ellison of Watson, Mo; Clarence Ellison of Phoenix, Ariz, is a brother. He has four granddaughters, six grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant children, a sister Iva Campbell and a brother C.M. Ellison. [Jul 22, 1976]

Ellis, William Earl (Bud), 84, of Tarkio, Mo, died Aug 16 at Community Hospital in Fairfax, Mo. He grew up in the Coin, Ia, area and was a farmer and a house mover, along with his father.

He was born on Feb 17, 1902 at Coin, the son of H.D. and Bertha (Polsley) Ellis.

On Dec 24, 1924, he married Gladys Wood at Braddyville, Ia. They lived in Page County [Iowa], Nodaway County [Missouri] and in Westboro, MO moving to Prescott, Az, in 1978 and moving to Tarkio, Mo, in June 1986.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Elmo, Mo, and a life member of the Masonic Lodge, Nodaway Lodge #140 of Clarinda [Iowa].

Survivors include his wife of Tarkio; a son, Glenn, of Prescott, Az; three grandsons; and a half brother, H.N. Ellis of Malvern, Ia.

He was preceded in death by a sister, a half-sister and a step-brother.

Funeral services will be held this Tuesday at 2 pm at the United Methodist church in Elmo. Burial will be in Center Grove cemetery near Westboro, Mo.

Davis Funeral Home of Tarkio, Mo, is in charge of arrangements.

Ellis, Gladys Fern, 86, of Elmo, Mo, died at Bethesda Care Center in Tarkio, Mo, Jan 25, 1988 after a long illness.

Born May 6, 1901, she was the daughter of S.F. and Francis (Dack) Wood.

In her youth she attended White Chapel country school near Elmo.

She was married to Earl Ellis Dec 24, 1924 in Braddyville. They lived to celebrate their 60h wedding anniversary in 1984 at the home of their son in Prescott, Az.

Her husband died Aug 16, 1986. She was a member of the Elmo United Methodist Church and had been active in the U.M.W. She was a former member of the Union Grove Club and the Elmo Fortnightly Club.

She is survived by her son, Glenn Ellis; daughter-in-law Caryl of Prescott, Az; three grandsons; brother Wilbur Wood of Maryville, Mo; four sisters, Mable Spoor of San Bernadino, Ca, Pansy Hutchings of Burlington Junction, Mo, Pauline Dotts of Artesia, NM and Liva Adkins of Burlington Junction; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Earl and her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Homer Wood.

Services were Jan 27 at the United Methodist Church in Elmo with interment in the Center Grove cemetery in Westboro, Mo.
